Where to Plant

Sunlight: Sunseekers Orange Coneflower needs full sun with at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily for the strongest stems and most prolific blooms. Plants grown in too much shade tend to become leggy, flop over, and produce fewer flowers. The sunniest spot in your garden will give you the best performance.

Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil and is remarkably adaptable to poor, rocky, or sandy conditions. Avoid heavy clay that stays waterlogged, as Echinacea roots are susceptible to rot in soggy soil. If you have clay soil, amend with compost and coarse sand to improve drainage. Container-grown plants need a quality potting mix with good drainage.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply twice a week during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once established, Sunseekers Orange is remarkably drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during extreme heat waves or prolonged dry spells. Provide about one inch of water weekly through rainfall or irrigation. If the soil stays too dry for too long, you may notice smaller flower heads and wilting foliage. Overwatering is a bigger threat than underwatering with established Coneflowers.

Pruning Tips

Deadhead spent blooms regularly throughout summer to encourage continuous reblooming. Simply snip the faded flower stem back to the next set of leaves or bud. This Sunseekers variety is bred for prolific reblooming, so regular deadheading extends the color show well into fall. In late fall or early spring, cut back all dead stems to the ground to make room for fresh growth. Leave some seed heads standing through winter to provide food for goldfinches and other songbirds.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer or a layer of compost in early spring when you see the first green shoots emerge. Coneflowers are not heavy feeders and too much fertilizer, especially nitrogen, produces lush foliage at the expense of flowers. One spring application is typically all that is needed. Avoid fertilizing after midsummer as this stimulates tender new growth that is vulnerable to winter damage.

At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

What to expect: About the size of a large coffee can. A well-developed root system in a manageable size. Good value choice when you have time to let the plant grow into the space over a season or two.

#2 Container

What to expect: A noticeable step up from a #1 in both plant size and root development. Good choice when you want visible presence without going to a larger size.

#3 Container

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.
