One of the world's loveliest deciduous trees, birch trees (Betula) are some of our all-time top-selling trees. You’ll find a delightful selection of Birch trees for sale at Nature Hills Nursery, with a variety to suit a number of tastes.

Birch tree in fall

People in northern climates love the Birch tree’s exquisite branching, attractive foliage and unique bark. Delight in the pointed, feather-veined leaves from the earliest days of spring through summer. They'll bring refreshing light shade and white noise from their rustling leaves.

Birch trees are used to accent mulched beds in a modern, relaxed planting. Install several for a natural grove that can be underplanted with hardy azaleas, Hosta, Vinca, Ferns and Tiarella Foam Flower.

Some cultivars even offer variegated foliage, like Shiloh Splash Birch tree. This outstanding accent tree stays compact, making it a great choice to decorate a small space garden or courtyard.

For larger areas, try fast-growing Birch trees, such as Heritage Birch. They feature the lightest-colored, fascinating exfoliating bark of all the River Birches.

Their lustrous dark green leaves turn golden-yellow fall color for a showy display. Other Birch varieties have brilliant fall color, too.

As fine as the leaves may be, it's the distinctive bark color that makes people fall in love. Glorious Birch bark delivers winter interest, but you'll notice the beauty year-round.

Study the multi-colored, peeling bark of the paper birch tree to find tones from pink to cinnamon. This celebrated tree really did serve as ancient paper, much like an arboreal Papyrus.

Or perhaps you prefer the stunning white bark of Whitespire Birch. Add designer style to your outdoor entertainment area with the elegant gray-chevroned lenticels of the white birch tree.

River Birch Trees for Rain Gardens

Most Birch trees do well in moist soil, and their lovely form looks beautiful and reflected in the water. Try an informal grouping of three or five trees for a noteworthy focal point.

Mulch underneath Birch trees to keep the shallow root systems cool. These exceptional trees will require less maintenance in a planting bed, rather than a lawn.

Run River Birch trees along the edge of a creek or stream. Or use them with other water-loving plants in a planned rain garden to filter potentially polluted runoff from roofs and streets.

Can I Plant a Big Birch Tree Close to My House?

You'd never want to count out using a Birch tree as a pretty accent tree anchoring a front yard planting. Give them the room they need, and select the right types of birch trees. Opt for impactful, small ornamental birch trees for best results.

Also be aware that Birch has a shallow root system that seeks water. Play it safe by giving it 20 to 30 feet from the trunk to a building.

You'll never regret showcasing the rugged, exfoliating bark of Fox Valley River Birch tree. The colors are so handsome, and this improved modern cultivar rarely needs pruning.

Specialty Uses for Birch Trees

Birch tree from ground

For airy, yet effective, privacy, install a large-scale Birch tree hedge to shield and screen an unsightly view. These chic, fast-growing trees bring an artfully effortless look to your landscape.

Birch trees can be grown as a single trunk or multi-stemmed clump. Use a mix of both to replicate a naturalized stand.

The Dura Heat River Birch tree is a heat-tolerant cultivar that stands up where others won't. Homeowners in zone 9 can finally get the Birch look they crave with this disease-resistant variety.

Create a sublime garden fantasy, playing up their delicate foliage. Plant an allée, or double row, on either side of a walkway, tipping the trunks towards each other to create a soul-stirring archway.

Even balconies or Roof Gardens can get in on a little Birch action. Grow Cesky Golden Dwarf Birch in containers for their bold foliage.

Birches make a perfect addition to wildlife gardens to provide food. They produce samara fruit and have long, easily shattered catkin flower clusters that are often eaten by area wildlife.

Birch is a lovely tree with high-quality wood logs that are often used in furniture. You might also have seen the bundled Whitespire or Paperbark Birch branches for sale at Farmer's Markets or florist shops.

Sell your pruned Birch limbs, or trim them to keep as a decoration near your fireplace. Birch logs are also popular for use in outdoor winter containers, and they sell for top dollar.

Planting and Care Tips for Birch Trees

Select a site in full sun or partial shade. Birch trees are adaptable, but grow best in acidic soils that are well-drained.

When you choose Birch trees for sale at Nature Hills, we take a number of steps to help ensure the greatest success. Once you place an order with us, we pull your tree and prep it for shipment when the time is right to plant in your area.

You’ll be notified once your order has shipped, at which time you can track the box to your doorstep. Then open the box and remove the tree from its package.

Water your new tree well before planting. Dig a hole as deep as the root system, and twice as wide.

Be sure to use Nature Hills Root Booster to supply a symbiotic support that never wears out. Carefully plant your Birch in the hole, and tuck the backfill soil around it.

Saturate the ground around your new tree to eliminate air pockets. Ensure they'll get consistent moisture to keep them happy and healthy.

Then, apply a three-inch layer of mulch over their shallow roots. Please pull mulch back away from touching the trunks.

Wait to prune Birch trees until late spring. Like Maples, Birch sap rises and will bleed. This is an open invitation for pests to move in.

Types of Birch Trees: Identifying Characteristics

North American Birch trees are generally small to medium-sized thin-leaved hardwood trees or large shrubs with unique bark. Birch bark is marked with horizontal lenticels and often comes off in thin, papery sections.

Birches are widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in northern temperate climates. They are known as a pioneer species because they quickly populate open meadows and areas recently touched by wildfire.

Europe has a native genus Betula species, too. These special trees played an important role in Celtic religion; they symbolized rebirth and the start of the New Year.

With its ornate bark — which can be white, grey, yellow, silver or black — whimsical branches and gorgeous fall foliage, Birch trees are a popular choice among professional landscapers. If you see your favorite types of birch trees in stock on our website — order yours quickly.
