Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature size of Green Gem Boxwood?

  • Green Gem Boxwood develops into a naturally rounded, compact shrub reaching 3-4 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide at maturity. This perfectly proportioned growth habit makes it an excellent choice for low hedges, foundation plantings, topiary spheres, and formal garden borders. Its uniform, dense branching creates an attractive mounded shape that requires minimal shaping to maintain its classic boxwood appearance.

How fast does Green Gem Boxwood grow?

  • Green Gem Boxwood has a slow to moderate growth rate, adding approximately 2-4 inches of new growth annually. This steady, controlled growth pattern is actually an advantage, as it maintains its neat, compact form with minimal pruning requirements. While patience is needed for larger installations, this slower growth means less maintenance and longer-lasting landscape designs.

What's the difference between Green Gem and Green Velvet Boxwood?

  • Green Gem forms a tight, naturally spherical mound reaching about 4 feet, while Green Velvet grows slightly larger and more vigorously, making it better suited for medium-height hedges. Choose Green Gem for low borders, foundation accents, and small topiary forms; select Green Velvet when you need faster coverage or larger formal shapes.

What's the proper spacing for Green Gem Boxwood hedges?

  • For a dense, continuous hedge, plant Green Gem Boxwood 18-24 inches apart (measured center-to-center). This spacing allows the plants to grow together while maintaining good air circulation. For individual specimen plantings or a more open, natural look, space plants 3-4 feet apart to accommodate their full mature spread without crowding.

What hardiness zones does Green Gem Boxwood grow in?

  • Green Gem Boxwood is cold hardy in USDA zones 4-9, making it one of the most cold-tolerant boxwood varieties available. Originally developed in Canada, it can withstand temperatures down to -30°F when properly established. This exceptional cold tolerance makes it an excellent choice for northern gardeners who want the classic boxwood look in challenging climates.

Is Green Gem Boxwood deer resistant?

  • Yes, Green Gem Boxwood is naturally deer resistant due to its dense, waxy foliage and bitter taste. Deer typically avoid browsing on boxwood plants, making them excellent choices for landscapes in areas with heavy deer pressure. This resistance, combined with their formal appearance, makes them popular for foundation plantings and garden borders in suburban and rural settings.

Can Green Gem Boxwood be grown in containers?

  • Green Gem Boxwood excels in container culture due to its compact size and slow growth rate. Use containers at least 18-24 inches wide with drainage holes, and plant in high-quality potting mix. Container plants need more frequent watering and should be protected from extreme temperature fluctuations. They're perfect for patios, entryways, and formal container gardens.
