Ever-impressive - The Alleghany Viburnum (Viburnum x rhytidophylloides 'Alleghany') is a wonderful choice for a low-maintenance and hard-working addition to the garden! Also known as the Leatherleaf Viburnum, it's a living contradiction between rugged adaptability and delightfully frilly fragrant flowers! All wrapped up into one truly adaptive spirit! This shrub is an excellent choice for long-lasting beauty that won't go out of style!

The Alleghany Viburnum is a garden classic with showy flat-topped yellow-white clusters of fragrant blooms that shine brightly through spring! They'll be smothered in bees and butterflies the entire time they're open for business! While these tasteful flowers glow in the springtime sun, they are made even more dramatic by the Alleghany Viburnum's backdrop of leathery, glossy, deep green leaves.

The ovular shape and deep veining of these leaves make them even more delightful in fall when the Alleghany Viburnum is deciduous and brightens to a golden yellow and orange in colder climates. If green is your color, you're in luck! Because the Alleghany Viburnum keeps its green all year long in southern zones and during mild winters of USDA hardiness zones 5 through 8.

This peppy plant also boasts bright red berries that age to a deep blue-black as they ripen and mature. Birds and squirrels truly love these charming berries. Don't be surprised when birds nest nearby the berry buffet for easy access to one of their favorite meals. Keep the buffet well-stocked by planting a pollinating partner. Try other Alleghany or pair up with the Lantana Viburnum for more fruit per shrub and fat, happy songbirds!

Planting and Application:

No matter where you plant your Alleghany Viburnum, its beauty and strength will not go to waste. Of course, it makes a wonderful addition to the wildlife garden and many landscapers find the Alleghany Viburnum to be one of the best-performing shrubs for a large-scale informal hedge or screen. Others use this showy plant as an anchor next to the home, garage, or shed. The Alleghany Viburnum also makes a wonderful choice when staggered for an unbreakable windbreak or to hold back winter's drifting snow, while providing wonderful privacy for you!

Viburnums are traditional additions to the cottage or rustic garden and the dark-green foliage creates the perfect backdrop for your other smaller shrubs and perennials. When it comes to wildlife, these are ideal shrubs for shelterbelts, groupings that create habitat, bird-friendly smorgasbords, and pollinator buffets! Deer rarely bother these shrubs and their vigorous growth easily competes with them in higher populated areas.

  • White-to-Yellow Sweetly Scented Blooms
  • Deep Olive Green Textured, Crinkled Leathery Foliage
  • Upright Vigorous Growth & Rugged Adaptability
  • Major Nectar & Berry Resource for Pollinators & Birds
  • Charming and Attractive Windbreak, Naturalizing, Hedge, Screen & Wildlife Interest

#ProPlantTips for Care:

An easily grown Viburnum variety, Alleghany prefers well-drained soil in full sun. They can grow in heavy clay soil but grows best in alkaline soils. Tolerant of both full sun and part shade, these hardy plants appreciate some afternoon shade in the hotter growing zones during summer. Once established, Lantana Viburnum handles dry soils and is drought tolerant, pest and disease-free and rarely damaged by deer.

Mainly grown as an ornamental tree or shrub for its flowers and berries, so be sure to only prune right after the flowers have just finished so you don't remove next year's blooms! Any pruning however will remove your songbird's fall feast. Renewal prune every 3-4 years by removing the oldest fattest stems to the ground and encouraging new growth and by skipping pruning and only renewal pruning you will still enjoy berries.

  • Full Sun to Partial Shade
  • Most Well-Drained Soils & Alkaline, Saline, Clay Soil & Juglone Tolerant
  • Tolerates Average to Moist Soil - Drought Tolerant Once Established
  • Easy to Prune & Low Maintenance
  • Deer Rarely Bother These Modest Suckering Naturalizing Shrubs

This exciting and vibrant shrub is a great choice for gardeners looking for reliable beauty with the added bonus of being beneficial for wildlife. Hurry and order the Alleghany Leatherleaf Viburnum from NatureHills.com today!
