Fire Light® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'SMHPFL' PP25,135) makes an impressive display, boasting 12 to 16-inch blooms held upright on strong red stems that will not droop. Its thick sturdy stems hold up the beautiful upright panicles flowers so they are prominently displayed in the garden.
Fire Light® Hydrangea is the new cold-hardy standard to measure all hardy Hydrangeas. This woody Hydrangea selection has the most incredible white flowers that age into rich, dark pink. The showy flower display on the plants in the landscape lasts for months.
This plant commands attention all summer and fall in your landscape. The lush color-changing blooms are a great focal point. With enough sun, water and well-drained soil, you'll see the huge white flower panicles begin to bloom in summer. The flowers age to a rich pink and remain showy right up until the plants go dormant.
This fantastic flower color lasts well into fall, when they’ll begin to turn light tan in color. Why not let them remain on the plant all winter long to give you extra winter interest? They’ll look amazing all winter long.
If you prefer to tidy things up in fall, go ahead and trim back the flowers. Use them for dried arrangements. Hydrangea flowers are some of the best for drying for winter color. Some people even spray-paint the blooms! Cut them after they have started to dry on the plant.
Fire Light® Hydrangea makes a striking accent plant but is even more eye-catching planted in a row. Plant it behind spring-flowering bulbs, Irises and Roses for an unforgettable display all season long. The plants make incredible specimen plants, and are super for screening or hedging, too.
You can train Fire Light® Hydrangea to a more compact size with moderate pruning. They are very well-behaved in large containers, too. How nice to have a portable dose of color that can be moved into a position where you need it in summer!
White flowers are born in large trusses on the ends of each branch in summer and those flowers age to a beautiful pink that darkens as they age. Fire Light® is one of the deepest pink shades available on the market. Order Fire Light® Panicle Hydrangea from Nature Hills today!
How to Use Fire Light Hydrangea in the Landscape
Fire Light® Hydrangea makes an excellent anchor plant for the corner of a smaller home. They are also easily maintained as foundation plants. Make people look twice when you use these gorgeous, sophisticated shrubs.
These super showy woody deciduous shrubs make perfect screening plants. Use a row of them alongside a sunny patio area. They’ll work beautifully to block out the next-door neighbor without taking over your landscape.
Use Fire Light® as a lovely backdrop to a perennial or mixed flower border. It easily fills space and supports earlier blooming varieties. Then, just wait! The flowers start blasting off in summer and look fantastic all winter long.
Use the blooms as lovely cut flowers indoors. Be sure to cut a long length of the strong stems to help support the panicle Hydrangeas.
Create a low, solid hedge by planting 2 to 3 feet apart on center. You’ll measure from the center of one plant to the center of the next. Remember to always trim a hedge so it is wider at the base of the plant, and a bit narrower at the top.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Fire Light® Panicle Hydrangea is a Hydrangea paniculata. This group of Hydrangeas cannot have their flower color altered by lower or higher soil pH. It’s an easy-to-grow deciduous shrub that loves the sun and is hardy over a wide area.
Fire Light® Hydrangea will thrive in most soils, as long as it drains well after a rain. If you need to improve the drainage, add additional soil 18 - 24" above your native soil. Plant in that mound.
While your plant is still young, give it moderate regular water. This will help it get established in your soil. Give it supplemental water during hot spells so it can develop those nice big full flower panicles you love.
Fire Light® Hydrangea is easy to maintain with one simple prune in late winter or early spring before it starts to grow.
This plant blooms on new wood. Prune it in late winter or very early spring, just before it starts to leaf out. Always keep in mind that you should prune back about 1/3 of the size from last year. Cut it down to 2-3 feet and then just leave the plants alone.
Once the plants begin to grow, don’t prune any of the new shoots or you will lose this year’s blooms. They will put on all new growth adding 2-3 feet of growth and of course those amazing creamy-white into rich, pomegranate-pink flowers that again remain showy until you cut them off in early spring.
Hydrangea paniculata types will live in partial shade, but they need lots of sun to make lots of flowers. Careful planning when siting your plants will encourage the plants to begin to get shaded; you will notice that the flowers will become smaller or fewer flowers may be produced.
This plant is a Proven Winners® selection. Count on it to perform beautifully for you in your landscape.
Order today, Fire Light® Panicle Hydrangea is a very high-demand variety and we sell out quickly!
