Just getting started with a blank slate of a yard? Or placing the finishing touches on your newly redesigned landscape? Make the most of your outdoor space with the right-sized, four-season Summer Snowflake Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum tomentosum 'Summer Snowflake'). You'll have many years to enjoy a showy display of flowers, fruit, and fall color all at the same time!
This fantastic Viburnum is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with incredibly eye-catching horizontal stems! Come spring, Summer Snowflake is covered with lacecap clusters of white flowers in a double row above and below each branch. The main flush happens early, but you'll have successive flushes through the season through September in most years. The ultra-dark green foliage is a perfect foil to set them off to perfection.
Each five-inch leaf has prominent veins symmetrically arranged off the main midrib. You'll be frankly astounded by their midnight blue-green beauty. Who knew leaves could be so pretty? Snip a branch or two for cunning flower arrangements. Grow several shrubs so you can have plenty of fresh material on hand. Don't be surprised to see flowers and fruit on the same branch.
You'll entice butterflies with the blooms, and local songbirds with the berries. Using several shrubs also ensures the best berry production. You'll love how the sweet blossoms develop into bold orange-red berries that coordinate beautifully with the rusty-red foliage fall color. Even in winter, Summer Snowflake Viburnum holds its own as an architectural accent. The tiered branch structure takes its turn to shine after the leaves drop.
For best cross-pollination and resulting fruit display for fall berries, plant shrubs in groups rather than as single specimens. You'll love Summer Snowflake Viburnum, so that's easy advice to follow. Cold and heat tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 5 through 8, this 5-6 foot tall shrub has an impressive spread of 6-10 feet at maturity.
Planting and Application:
Summer Snowflake is a compact Doublefile Viburnum variety that works in small space gardens. It packs a lot of ornamental benefits into a lush footprint. These versatile flowering shrubs are very special hedging plant because the densely held foliage gives privacy to patio planting beds. Cottage gardens, Moon Gardens and Pollinator borders gleam with the inclusion of these fantastic shrubs!
Plant five feet apart on center to create a solid screen that brings seclusion to your yard! Create outdoor rooms, fence off a seating area, or hide prying eyes. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Fill a large area with multiple staggered rows to create a mass planting. This treatment looks amazing on commercial properties, too!
Summer Snowflake is a great size for privacy. It's large enough to use as a flowering, fruiting and fall color backdrop to a perennial border. Let your shoulders drop, and enjoy a cup of coffee in your pajamas without reprisal. Plant three in a loose triangle in a mulched lawn planting bed where you'll see it from the picture window. Reduce your shoveling task with a snow fence along your driveway set against the prevailing wind. Hide your air conditioner, beautify your side yard - you'll find many places to enjoy flowering snowflakes in July!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Summer Snowflake is easily grown in average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Give it at least four hours of direct sunshine a day. This plant does best in moist loamy soil. However, it tolerates a wide range of soils, as long as they drain well. Pay close attention to watering when your shrub is young. After the roots are established, it displays tolerance to periodic drought. Mulch is a great idea to keep the root system cool. Apply a three-inch layer of mulch, then pull it back from the stems.
Prune to shape as needed immediately after flowering. Timing is key, as it will start to develop next year's blooms on this year's wood. Don't wait too long after that first flush of spring blooms or you'll trim off the blooms for next year. You can also skip tip pruning and renewal prune only if you wish to have fruit for birds by removing the largest, thickest stems from the ground every few years. This will rejuvenate your shrub. Leave the young stems in place, which will flower nicely for you next spring.
