How to Use Sprinter® Boxwood in the Landscape

Sprinter® Boxwood is a really nice choice for foundation planting. The sweet shape and shiny foliage will likely remain glossy green all winter without much bronzing.

One of the most effective ways to use this sophisticated plant is to edge the perimeter of garden beds with it. Keep the center of the bed open for other flowering plants. Boxwood acts like a picture frame to create a beautiful scene.

It stays small and rounded, so you won’t need to prune it for size unless you want to. Its vibrant, green foliage is robust and shiny.

For a formal look, use Sprinter like you would other Boxwood selections as formal sheared hedges. Sheared individual plants make excellent foundation plants and are incredible when planted in pots and used in groupings with other foliage and flowering plants.

Sprinter can also be grown more naturally and a bit fluffy, without tight shearing. Trust us, you’ll love the look as they mound up in a foundation planting. Sprinter can be used along the back of a shorter perennial garden or repeated throughout a mixed border to give year-round interest.

Sprinter thrives in full sun and will perform in partial shade conditions, as well. Use in a long hedge that may travel through the shade of taller trees.

If you want a hedge in sun and partial shade, Sprinter is a wonderful choice. Because it works in full sun or partial shade, you can run a continuous hedge near large trees or shaded by architecture.

Create a nice tight, low formal hedge by planting 15-18” apart. You’ll measure from the center of one plant to the center of the next. The closer you plant them, the faster they will grow together.

Modern gardeners are playing with the revered Boxwood. Try easing the spacing of a hedge out a bit to 2-3 feet apart for a more natural look.

Create a restful focal point for yourself and your guests with a fresh take on classic English Knot gardens. Create geometric beds of Boxwood, but include places for people to sit and relax in your up-to-date garden.

Can you imagine a strict geometric design that surrounds a sturdy hammock stand or funky “She Shed”? Or how about planting a maze of Boxwood near a child’s play structure? Use humor in your garden, loosen up, and have some fun. Boxwood literally makes just about any garden fancy or folly look spectacular.

The versatility of Sprinter leaves the door open to how you would like to use it. Sun or partial shade, sheared or not, and adaptable to most soils as long as they drain – all broaden the scope of how this plant can be used.

This plant will stay naturally small. It should provide you with many years of enjoyment without outgrowing its spot.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Sprinter® Boxwood requires well-drained soil. If you suspect poorly drained soil in the planting location, “mound up” by adding native soil 18” high. Plant directly in the mound.

For young plants, you’ll want to provide a moderate amount of water as the roots get established in your native soil. We really do recommend adding a packet of Nature Hills Root Booster for each plant. It will help the plant’s roots get established faster.

Check the condition of the soil before watering using the Finger Test, a trick from our Horticultural Team. Poke your finger into the ground up to the second knuckle. Is it moist? Skip watering that day. Is it starting to get dry? Time to water.

Baby your Sprinters in the first season.

Even after the Sprinter® Boxwood is well established, give it supplemental water during extended periods of drought. Be sure it gets a good watering in the fall before winter sets in and the ground freezes.

This variety isn’t known to bronze or burn in cold winters, but why take the chance? Protect your investment with a judicious watering schedule and a sheltered spot out of the worst of the prevailing winter winds.

Formal plantings can be pruned as needed, but in colder climates, it is best not to shear Boxwood plants late in summer or fall. Late-season pruning may initiate growth that may not harden off properly before the end of the growing season. Instead, wait until the flush of growth needs pruning in later spring.

Sprinter is hardy in zones 5-8, so check your USDA zone by entering your zip code above the Plant Highlights. Sprinter® Boxwood is an improved, fast-growing form of ‘Winter Gem’ that combines those stellar features with a faster-growing nature. With glossy, evergreen foliage, this low-growing form of Winter Gem is great for hedging. And because it’s a Proven Winners® selection, you can count on its beautiful performance. It will stay attractive year-round. Salt tolerant, you can use it near streets or in coastal settings.
