Looking for a shrub with pretty, dark green foliage? The Green Velvet Boxwood (Buxus x 'Green Velvet') is a cold hardy, full-bodied Boxwood variety.
First introduced by Sheridan Nursery in Canada, Green Velvet Boxwood is a hybrid that takes the best characteristics from its parents. You'll love the round-leaved, rounded habit of English Boxwood and the cold hardiness of Korean Boxwood all rolled into one excellent selection!
This shrub never needs pruning. It will grow into a naturally rounded shape. Now, on the other hand, if you want to shear or prune it - go right ahead! That's the beauty of Boxwood, after all.
This evergreen will perform for you in a formal garden setting, or in a more modern landscape to give structure all year long. Lovely deep green leaves are held all year. Bright green foliage and tiny fragrant blossoms appear in early spring.
Green Velvet Boxwood is one of the best spreading forms with a beautiful rich, deep green color. Well known for hardiness, this is a relatively fast-growing selection that has become the standard for spreading Boxwood in a variety of growing conditions.
This variety grows beautifully in moderate cold regions if given a bit of protection. Unlike other evergreens, this variety experiences minimal winter bronzing, so you will enjoy its vibrant color even in the cold months.
You'll appreciate the way it adds color and fine texture to the landscape.
The Green Velvet is a 1997 Styer Award Winner & 1998 Michigan Growers' Choice Award Winner. Once you have one in your yard, it will be easy to see why this evergreen Boxwood is a prize-winning specimen. Order yours today!
How to Use Green Velvet Boxwood in the Landscape
This versatile plant can be used so many ways. Enjoy it and let your imagination soar!
Create an elaborate formal Knot Garden lined with dense, sheared Boxwood hedge borders. Simply plant multiples to frame an open geometric pattern, then keep the Boxwood borders all clipped and trimmed up. Next, fill each open section with another plant. This could be easy care Russian Sage, fragrant French Lavender or even a really special Tree Form Rose or Hydrangea.
Sheared formal hedges are also excellent for outlining formal beds and defining spaces. If you enjoy the gentle art of pruning and want an accent, try your hand at topiary techniques.
Many like to use Green Velvet Boxwood in containers. Simply shear them into perfect spheres for a wonderful look. Use them in pots flanking your front door for a classic way to greet your guests in style. Green Velvet Boxwood is one of our favorites.
Not only can Green Velvet Boxwood be sheared into very formal hedges or individual plants, but they can be left unpruned as well. Unpruned Boxwood grown naturally makes an incredibly soft and natural-looking rounded shrub. These can also be used as informal hedges and save you time while still getting a formal effect.
Use a few plants along the foundation of your house or mixed into a shrub border. In this application, we'd advise that you simply let them grow into their handsome natural form.
Mass them to make a large evergreen presence in your landscape. Create "bones" of your garden design by placing them in long curves along the entire length of a garden planting bed. Use brightly colored annuals or perennials in front of them.
For a contemporary look, try single plants placed in a geometric pattern with enough room between them so they don't touch as mature plants. Mulch with stones or use fun recycled tumbled glass mulch.
Japanese gardens with a flair for Zen calm can use this shrub to great effect. Plant a group of 3 together as a sweet representation of the concept of Family.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Green Velvet Boxwood is a broadleaf evergreen that requires little care. If left alone, it will assume a pleasing, 3-foot rounded shape and maintain its color year-round.
They will grow in a wide range of soils. They do prefer moist, well-drained soils and supplemental moisture as needed. They like full sun but are excellent in partial shade too.
They are best suited out of open exposed areas in the colder climates. For best results, try to plant in a sheltered area where they will receive winter sun. They'll do best in a setting where they don't have to bear the brunt of heavy, wet snow and the full blast of winter winds.
Green Velvet puts on a nice flush of new growth in late spring. Once that growth has developed is the right time to shear them into the shape you desire. Later in the summer, you may see a secondary flush of new growth that is much lighter.
When using any Boxwood as a sheared hedge, it is always important to trim so that the lowest part of the hedge is the widest part of the hedge. When you trim your hedges that way, the sunlight will always keep the foliage dense and branched nicely right to the ground.
Water Boxwood planted in containers regularly and given additional water in high heat. Drip irrigation is a great solution for containers.
When you start with larger-sized plants, you'll enjoy faster results. Order today at Nature Hills Nursery!
