Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best flower production. While it tolerates partial shade, you will notice fewer reblooming cycles and less vibrant flower color if it stays in the dark too long.
  • Soil: This shrub prefers well drained soil that stays consistently moist. If you have heavy clay that drains slowly, plant your Weigela in a raised mound to keep the root ball from sitting in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

For the first growing season, water your shrub deeply two or three times a week to help the roots reach deep into the soil. Mature plants are quite tough and can handle short dry spells, but inconsistent moisture will cause the plant to stop producing its signature rebloom. Think of steady watering as the fuel that keeps the flower production running from late spring through frost.

Pruning Tips

This variety is unique because it blooms on both old wood from last year and new growth from the current season. You should only prune immediately after the first heavy flush of spring flowers has finished. Trimming the branch tips at this time acts like a fresh haircut, stimulating the plant to produce the new wood needed for its summer and fall floral displays.

Fertilizer Needs

Use a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as the leaf buds begin to swell. Avoid applying high nitrogen fertilizers after midsummer, as this can trigger a surge of soft growth that will not have time to harden off before the winter cold arrives. Keeping the nutrients balanced ensures the plant focuses its energy on flower buds rather than just excessive green leaves.

As the flowers recede and rebloom, you'll begin to notice the dramatic, dark green foliage that fills out the few spaces between the blossoms - which continue to rebloom until the first frost! Sonic Bloom® doesn't need deadheading and provides a remarkable show - from spring through fall! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 8, there is little that fazes this adaptable shrub!

Planting and Application:

Your Sonic Bloom® Pink Weigela is a very dense shrub with a mounded nature! It's perfect for foundation plantings that bump up the curb appeal with three seasons of color! #ProPlantTips for Care:

This pretty shrub may look high-maintenance, but it's actually quite easy to grow. Plant in full sun for the best color. Weigela shrubs require at least six hours a day, with eight or more just improving the color and quality. Super easy to grow and doesn't fuss or require fussing, Weigela are very late to leaf out in spring, so be patient if you don't see signs of life on your shrub. Doing best in average garden soils, Weigela enjoys moderate moisture levels. Weigela does need well-drained soils but is not particular on the soil type. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture in the ground as well as insulates the root system from heat and chill.

Weigela won't need much pruning, or deadheading in order to rebloom. However, if you wish to give them some pruning, just be sure to do it right after that first spring flush of color. Weigela does benefit from a renewal pruning every few years, with the oldest stems removed that are not as productive to keep the shrub dense, loaded in blooms and lushly covered in foliage.
