Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Vavoom thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct light daily to maintain its intense orange color. While it can handle light afternoon shade in exceptionally hot climates, too much shade results in fewer blooms and increased risk of powdery mildew.
  • Soil: This rose prefers rich, loamy soil that drains well but holds onto moisture. If you have heavy clay that stays soggy, mix in organic compost to improve drainage, or plant in a raised mound to keep the "feet" of your rose from sitting in water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, give your rose a deep soaking two to three times per week to help the roots travel deep into the soil. Once established, Vavoom is moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering will lead to smaller flowers and scorched leaf edges. Aim for about one inch of water per week, applying it directly to the soil surface to keep the foliage dry and prevent disease.

Pruning Tips

Since this floribunda blooms on new wood, you should prune it in early spring just as the leaf buds begin to swell. Think of this like a fresh haircut that clears out the center of the bush to let air circulate, which prevents mold and encourages a massive flush of new orange roses. Use sharp bypass pruners to cut the canes back by about one third, making your cuts at a 45 degree angle just above an outward facing bud.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed your Vavoom with a balanced rose fertilizer or a slow release organic formula starting in early spring and again after the first big wave of flowers fades. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or early fall because this encourages soft, leafy growth that will get zapped by the first frost. Proper feeding ensures the plant has the energy to produce that signature neon pigment all season long.
