Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This perennial thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. While it can handle very light afternoon shade, too much shade results in floppy stems and significantly fewer of those signature orange and yellow blooms.
  • Soil: Aim for well-drained, lean soil. If you have heavy clay, plant in a raised bed or incorporate fine gravel to improve drainage, as "wet feet" during winter is the quickest way to lose a Blanket Flower.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to help the roots knit into your local soil. Once established, SpinTop® Orange Halo is remarkably drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during extreme dry spells. If you overwater or leave the soil soggy, the plant may develop root rot or produce lush foliage at the expense of its vibrant flowers.

Pruning Tips

This plant blooms on new wood, so you should cut it back to about 3 inches above the ground in early spring before new growth appears. During the summer, deadheading spent blooms encourages the plant to keep producing new buds rather than putting energy into seed production. Think of deadheading like a quick cleanup that signals the plant to stay in its peak flowering phase for a longer period.

Fertilizer Needs

Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in early spring as new growth emerges. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because they stimulate tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. In many cases, a simple one-inch layer of organic compost applied in the spring provides all the nutrients this rugged plant needs.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Give Gaillardia a spot in full sun, where the soil drains quickly after a rain. They won't tolerate wet heavy clay soils or areas that might be wet in winter. Once their roots are established, they'll become a durable, Waterwise addition to a Xeric landscape. Thriving in average to low fertility and almost any type of well-drained soil. Gaillardia self-seeds, so deadhead after the blooms fade is recommended, and to encourage a rebloom, but if you miss a few in the fall - the songbirds will help themselves to the snack. Prune back in late fall once the foliage begins to yellow.

  • Loves Full Sun
