Description
A Fragrant, Old-Fashioned Rose That Actually Takes Care of Itself
Reminiscent® Crema Rose (Rosa x 'BOZFRA121') is everything gardeners have always wanted from a white rose: full, richly fragrant blooms with that classic, old-fashioned form, packaged in a modern shrub that shrugs off disease and keeps blooming without constant attention. It's hardy in zones 4 through 9, making it one of the most adaptable fragrant roses we carry. If you've ever given up on white roses because of blackspot or fussiness, this one is worth a second look.
Bred and introduced by Proven Winners®, the Reminiscent® series was designed specifically to bring heirloom rose beauty into low-maintenance landscapes. The Crema variety delivers that buttermilk-cream flower color that photographs beautifully and pairs with almost anything in the garden.
Features and Characteristics
The blooms are full-petaled and cupped, with the kind of rich, sweet fragrance you'd expect from a much older variety. Flowers open in a warm buttermilk cream and soften to a soft ivory as they age, creating a layered, multi-tonal effect across the plant at any given moment.
- Mature height: 3 to 4 feet tall
- Mature spread: 2 to 3 feet wide
- Bloom period: late spring through early fall, with repeat flushes in early summer and late summer
- Fragrance: yes, notably strong for a modern shrub rose
- Pollinator-friendly: yes, attracts bees and other beneficial insects
- Disease resistance: superior resistance to blackspot and powdery mildew
Growth rate is moderate, and the plant fills in with dense, glossy foliage that stays clean through the season. Because it's self-cleaning, spent blooms drop on their own and the plant cycles back into flower without deadheading. That's a big deal for a rose with this level of fragrance and flower size.
Landscaping Uses and Design Ideas
At 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, Reminiscent® Crema fits a wide range of landscape roles. Plant it in a mixed perennial border where the cream flowers bridge warm and cool color schemes, or use three to five plants in a row to create a fragrant low hedge along a walkway or fence line.
It works beautifully in a cutting garden. The blooms are long-stemmed enough to bring inside, and the fragrance carries well in a vase. For container growing on a patio or deck, choose a pot at least 18 inches wide and deep to give the root system room to establish.
Good companion plants include lavender, salvia, catmint, and ornamental grasses. The cool, neutral flower color also pairs well with deep purples and soft pinks. For more fragrant rose options, browse our most fragrant roses collection.
Planting and Care
Plant Reminiscent® Crema Rose in a location that receives full sun, meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. More sun generally means more blooms and better air circulation, which supports the plant's already strong disease resistance. Well-drained soil with moderate fertility is ideal. Amend heavy clay soils with compost before planting to improve drainage.
Water deeply at the root zone once or twice per week during the first growing season to encourage deep root establishment. Once established, the plant is reasonably drought tolerant but blooms best with consistent moisture. Avoid overhead watering, which can promote fungal issues even on disease-resistant varieties.
Pruning is straightforward. In early spring, cut the plant back by about one-third to one-half before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing canes at that time. Light shaping throughout the season is fine, but heavy summer pruning isn't necessary and can delay the next bloom flush. For a full walkthrough on timing and technique, see our rose pruning guide.
