Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This coreopsis needs full sun to produce its richest deep red color and densest flower coverage. Aim for at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight. While it can handle light afternoon shade in very hot climates, you may see fewer blooms and slightly weaker stems.
  • Soil: It thrives in well drained soil that is not overly rich. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost or plant in a raised bed to prevent soggy roots. For sandy soil, a light layer of mulch helps retain just enough moisture to keep the plant happy without it becoming waterlogged.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Red Satin Coreopsis twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once the plant is established, it becomes quite drought tolerant and usually only needs supplemental water during long dry spells. If you let the soil dry out completely for too long, the plant will produce fewer flowers and the foliage may start to look scorched.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in early spring before fresh growth begins. Use sharp shears to cut the stems back to about 3 or 4 inches above the ground to encourage a flush of healthy new stems. You can also give the plant a light "haircut" after the first heavy flush of flowers in midsummer to stimulate a second round of blooms for the autumn.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as the new green growth appears. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this forces soft new growth that can be easily damaged by the first winter frost. A light application of compost around the base of the plant once a year is usually all it needs to stay productive and vibrant.

Description

Highly saturated blooms on tall stems, PERMATHREAD™ Red Satin Tickseed (Coreopsis x 'Red Satin' PP# 25736), also known to many as Threadleaf Coreopsis, is a superior selection of the sunny, heat-loving native wildflower! The Red Satin Tickseed are long-blooming, drought tolerant and disease resistant, fearless little perennial that is also seedless!

These easy-to-grow flowers are abundant jewels for your garden design! Dark, wine-red soaked flowers have a pearlescent sheen on the petals and gleaming golden centers that attract butterflies and pollinators from far and wide! Blooming in early summer, the daisy-like petals are pleated and lightly toothed, usually a bit slimmer than other Coreopsis. Each with a shimmery sheen, they glisten in the sun!

When not in flower, they are just as beautiful! A healthy mound of bright-green foliage boasts finely cut leaves and long deep lobes. Plants emerge a bit later in the spring but profusely bloom all summer into fall. The more you cut, the more they bloom, so keep your vases full and your pollinators will be full too! Compact, rounded mounds valiantly tolerate sweltering sunny, hot dry garden beds.

Planting and Application:

These sun-loving gems fill your perennial beds and borders with long-stem blossoms, making them amazing as cut flowers for floral arrangements. Cutting borders and cottage gardens become bright beacons with the addition of these beauties. Reaching a modest 15-18 inches wide and 2-foot tall, these make fantastic additions to larger containers and add a burst of bold color to sunny planters and window boxes, porches and patios alike. The fresh color and lacy foliage are the perfect backdrops for the bold blooms to follow in late spring to early summer!

Coreopsis are truly North American natives, and as such, bloom with carefree abandon almost anywhere you plant them in the US. Tickseed is Xeric (very drought tolerant) and works great in urban water-wise designs. Wildflower gardens are, of course, perfect sites for Red Satin Tickseed! Making themselves at home in rock gardens and prairies as well.

Plant Coreopsis Red Satin en masse to fill hot dry areas with deep, wine-red flowers with an orange center. Providing gorgeous hardiness that won't back down from tough conditions each early through late summer. The showy blooms are deer and rabbit resistant, so are a good choice for planting in large swaths along those out-of-the-way areas without the worry of them being mowed down.

  • Silky Wine-Red to Ruby Blooms & Bright Gold Centers
  • Fine Lacy Foliage & Bushy Rounded Growth

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Doing best in any kind of well-drained soil, Red Satin Tickseed is successful in poor, sandy and average soils. They're really not particular as long as they don't sit in water. Once established, Tickseed is very drought tolerant and thrives in those hottest dry sites most plants don't tolerate. A hardy native plant, these thrive in USDA zones 5-9.

Red Satin Tickseed loves full sun and a generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Deadhead to encourage to rebloom by cutting back the plant after the first flush is done. Highly disease resistant, these tough natives endure the toughest locations!
