Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for this variety, so aim for at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can survive in partial shade, you will see significantly fewer flowers and the stems may become leggy as they "reach" for the light.
  • Soil: These plants demand excellent drainage and will fail in "wet feet" or soggy conditions. If you have heavy clay, plant your Butterfly Bush in a raised mound or a container to ensure water moves away from the root ball quickly.

Watering Requirements

For the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to help the roots knit into your local soil. Once established, this dwarf shrub is remarkably drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during long dry spells. Avoid inconsistent watering habits, as swinging between bone-dry and saturated soil can cause the plant to drop its lower leaves and reduce the size of the flower spikes.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms exclusively on new wood, so you should prune it back in early spring just as the new green growth begins to emerge. Think of this like a fresh start for the season; cutting the stems back to about 12 inches from the ground encourages a flush of vigorous new branches that will carry the summer blooms. Removing spent flower spikes, or deadheading, throughout the summer is not strictly necessary for this sterile cultivar but will keep the plant looking tidy and polished.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release "Rose" or "All-Purpose" fertilizer once in early spring to fuel the initial growth spurt. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, because this triggers soft, leafy growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This late-season "tender" growth is much more susceptible to winter die-back and can compromise the overall health of the shrub.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Butterfly Bushes are low-maintenance shrubs that are perfect for new and busy gardeners alike! Plant in full sun throughout USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9. Plant your Lo & Behold® in full sun with well-drained soil. While Buddleia are low-water usage but do appreciate supplemental moisture during drought and the summer months to keep the flowers returning until frost. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to support your shrub's root system. Like most butterfly favorites, this deciduous plant is drought tolerant and not on any deer's menu of favorite snacks.

Pink Micro Chip never needs deadheading and is very low maintenance. Pruning in early spring will ensure a dense, more floriferous shrub, but isn't necessary. In cold climates, you will want to cut these plants back to the ground before spring because these plants act more like herbaceous perennials. However, when grown in warm growing zones, these woody shrubs only need an early spring trim will help ensure the best performance and best flowers.

It doesn't produce seeds, so it's not invasive like some other varieties (and certainly less messy). Nature Hills uses Plant Sentry™ to limit the sale of any plants in threatened areas, but there are no concerns about that with this sterile plant!
