Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-9
Ready for a miracle? Now even the smallest balcony garden can create a visual sensation with hot color. Best of all? You'll only need an hour or two of sunlight to enjoy lavish, fluffy midsummer blooms that last and last.
Get the color you crave in a compact, naturally dwarfed plant. Little Visions in Purple Astilbe PP #21,855 (Astilbe chinensis 'Little Visions in Purple') takes all the marvelous qualities of full-sized Astilbes, and shrinks them down a size!
Fuzzy, Fern-like leaves emerge from the ground each spring. Their bronzy color allows them to take the sun better than other selections; and makes a perfect contrast to the luxurious blooms!
In early summer, rosy-purple flower spikes flare straight up from the center of the plant. Enjoy these long-lasting colorful blooms for many weeks. Study them closely to see the tiny true flowers open in succession! These foamy plumes bring in the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds galore!
Snip them as they start to dry, and bring them indoors for cut flower bouquets. Once finished, hang them upside down to dry for a durable dried arrangement that looks incredible until next year.
You won't need to worry about sunlight conditions unless you are in the hottest climates. Give them a shadier spot if you live in USDA Zones 8 and 9, please. Growing into compact clumps 12 - 16 inches in height and in width at maturity with ease!
Landscape Application:
Astilbe is one of the classic shade garden plants. It is stunning in big drifts in a dappled shade border or under big shade trees where other plants might struggle. Grow these darling perennials in containers, or in the ground, because the "right-sized" Little Vision in Purple Astilbe fits where other varieties can't!
Try it as edging to hide any leggy bare stems in your woodland garden. Run it all along the shade of a north-facing wall as a perfect groundcover. Create a massed planting with multiple plants spaced eight to ten inches apart.
Watch and see. They'll immediately have a place in mind. Savvy old gardeners know the power of a well-placed "pop" of color at ground level. Little Vision in Purple Astilbe turns any old "ho-hum" shady corner into a splendid focal point. Now, how about finally jazzing up your boring side yard? Carve out a special place to sit and read that juicy summer novel.
This herbaceous perennial easily fills in small spaces. Its dwarf size makes it a can't-miss addition to smaller urban gardens or as a "Thriller" in pots on a shady deck or balcony. Create a perfect early display with one as a specimen exterior container. Enjoy the bold flowers for weeks! As the blooms fade, change them out and plant them in your landscape.
They also make great gifts for gardeners. Trust us...any seasoned landscaper will be thrilled with your thoughtful gift!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This versatile perennial can take full sun in cooler zones if Astilbe receives good moisture and mulch. Otherwise, give it a part shade or full shade for warmer zones. This Astilbe prefers moist,well-drained soils with a high percentage of organic matter. If your soil is poor, consider adding a few handfuls of compost to the backfill soil when planting.
You'll also want to use Nature Hills Root Booster beneficial soil additives when planting. This formula contains mycorrhizal fungus, which supports the tiny feeder roots to efficiently access water and soil micronutrients. Over time, enrich your soil with mulch and top-dressings of compost. Apply a phosphorus-rich, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Ensure the formula is for flowering plants and apply according to the directions.
You'll want to avoid letting them become too dry. Plan to provide supplemental water on a regular basis. Astilbes love a layer of mulch over their roots. Please pull it back away from touching the stems of the plants.
Please leave the old foliage standing over winter to give their crown protection from winter damage. We recommend that you wait until spring to cut back the old foliage.
That's it! Water, mulch, and a once-a-year trimming!
