Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Astilbe thrives in partial shade to full shade, performing best with about 2 to 4 hours of gentle morning sun. Avoid hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage and cause the plant to dry out too quickly.
  • Soil: Plant in soil that is rich in organic matter and stays consistently moist but drains well. If you have heavy clay or sandy soil, amend it generously with compost or peat moss to help retain the moisture these roots crave without causing waterlogging.

Watering Requirements

Consistency is critical for Astilbes; they are thirsty plants that should never be allowed to dry out completely. Water deeply 2 to 3 times a week during the establishment period, and maintain evenly moist soil thereafter, especially during summer heat. If watering is inconsistent, you will notice the leaves turning brown and crispy at the edges, a sign the plant is stressed and likely won't bloom well.

Pruning Tips

Bridal Veil® Astilbe is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground in winter, so you can cut the old foliage down to the ground in late autumn or early spring before new growth emerges. Leaving the dried flower stalks through winter adds nice texture to the garden, but removing them in spring clears the way for fresh green shoots. This cleanup helps improve air circulation and keeps the crown of the plant healthy for the growing season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer or a layer of organic compost in early spring just as new growth begins to poke through the soil. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages tender leafy growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost.

Ahhh...the appeal of a partially shaded yard is relaxing, soothing, and calm. Mature trees cast delicious shade and make your landscape very livable!

Now, all you need to do is add the romantically soft, fine-textured Bridal Veil® Astilbe (Astilbe x arendsii 'Bridal Veil'). The green, glossy, lacy fine-cut foliage looks great all season, and you'll be thrilled with the wide, tall spires of white flowers in summer!

The upright plume-like flowers rise high above a basal clump of attractive, finely serrated leaves. The impressive cluster is composed of masses of tiny flowers in summer, that pollinators adore! Butterflies adore these pristine blooms. You'll have many of these "flying flowers" come to sip from these nectar-rich resource plants. They work them over for a long time, as well. Keep your camera ready!

Also called False Spirea, the Bridal Veil® is an enchanting sight in the garden. You'll look forward to them and can reliably count on this variety to perform faithfully for you year after year! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4-9 and will grow into tidy clumps 2-3 feet tall and wide at maturity!

Landscape Application:

As you might imagine, Bridal Veil® is a fluffy, white variety that looks delicate and airy. It's well suited to any landscape style from formal to rustic and everything in between. If you can bear to trim any of the blooms, they can be brought inside and dried for cunning little flower arrangements. Bundle and hang them upside down to dry.

Use two Bridal Veil® flanking on either side of a shaded gate as a bright welcome! Paint the gate white, yellow, or indigo blue, whatever you like. The pure tones of the Bridal Veil® partner with any color. Let them be a long-lived staple in your garden. There aren't many plants as easy-care, nor as useful in a shaded spot. Contrast their foliage against large-leaved Hosta, or place them in front of native shrubs like Henry's Garnet Sweetspire.

Although we think these look best as part of a massed planting, you can certainly add a single plant as a specimen. Run several of them along the length of a forgotten sideyard to heighten the journey by creating anticipation for the destination. Use Bridal Veil® to define the boundary between a manicured lawn and a naturalized area.

Pair them with spring-blooming bulbs like Crocus or Narcissus under a deciduous flowering tree. They'll help hide the yellowing leaves of spent bulbs as they overlap their seasons of interest perfectly. Let it grace a memorial stone, or sit at the foot of a well-loved garden statue.

You'll love them in a long, natural-looking drift. To create, space them 1, 2, 3, or even 4 deep in a sinuous curve. Vary the spacing between 15 to 24 inches apart, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. Let the planting "flow" a bit and avoid straight rows.

Can you imagine how special several Bridal Veil® Astilbe would be as a wedding present? Use this beautiful perennial to commemorate an anniversary or even the passing of your beloved. Nature Hills offers many other Astilbe varieties. Create a wonderful mix of shades with a special collection!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Bridal Veil® loves 4 hours of sunlight a day. It is a durable plant that should do well with a bit more sun, as long as the soil doesn't get too dry. This plant responds beautifully when Nature Hills Root Booster beneficial soil additive is added to the top inches of soil during planting. Apply according to the directions.

While it does need well-drained soil in winter, Astilbe likes to remain moist in summertime. Use at least 3 inches of mulch over the root system to cut down on surface evaporation. Plan to provide supplemental water on a regular basis.

Because they need water, you'll be tempted to place them where your lawn sprinklers can reach them. Just take care when using lawn fertilizers nearby. Those are nitrogen-rich formulas that will reduce the blooming in your perennials.

Instead, give your Astilbes a good, slow-release fertilizer for flowering plants in early spring. Top dress with compost in spring, too. Do not cut it back in the winter, (the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage), but prune in early spring before new growth emerges.
