Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily for the best flower production. While it tolerates partial shade, you will notice fewer blooms and weaker stems if it does not get enough light.
  • Soil: This hibiscus loves rich, moist soil that does not dry out quickly. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost to improve drainage while keeping the moisture level consistent.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist like a wrung-out sponge to help the root system expand. Once established, these plants can handle brief dry spells, but inconsistent watering often leads to bud drop or smaller flowers. Aim for deep soakings at the base of the plant twice a week during the heat of summer to keep the foliage lush.

Pruning Tips

Luna™ Red Hibiscus is a perennial that dies back to the ground each winter, so it blooms entirely on new wood. Cut the dead woody stems down to about 4 inches above the ground in late winter or very early spring before new shoots emerge. This "clean slate" approach prevents old debris from harboring pests and makes room for the vigorous new growth that carries the summer flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring when you first see green shoots poking through the soil. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this encourages tender new growth that can be easily damaged by the first frost. A boost of phosphorus mid-season can help maximize the size and quantity of those deep red blooms.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Deer-resistant, Luna™ Red grows well in any fertile, well-drained soil with ample moisture. Do not allow it to dry to the wilting point. Be patient, Hibiscus can be slow to emerge in spring, sometimes the last to show before summer. However, their fast growth more than makes up for it. Be careful to not over-water until plants show signs of growth! For best performance, plant in full sun in moist soil before the heat of the summer.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Widely Adaptable to Soil & Climate
  • Moderate Moisture
  • Prune Off Dead Shoots in Late Autumn
  • Deer Resistant
