Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Hibiscus thrives in full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. While it can handle light afternoon shade, less sun usually results in fewer dinner plate blooms and weaker stems that may flop over.
  • Soil: It prefers rich, moist, and slightly acidic soil that holds onto water without becoming a stagnant swamp. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" in winter can cause the crown to rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water deeply twice a week to ensure the root system anchors properly. Once established, these plants are thirsty and require consistent moisture to keep their massive blooms from wilting, though they can handle short dry spells. If the soil stays too dry for too long, the plant will drop its lower leaves and produce significantly smaller flowers.

Pruning Tips

Luna Rose blooms on new wood, so you should cut the entire plant back to about 4 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring. This "hard haircut" encourages vigorous new growth from the base where the flowers will eventually form. Removing old, woody stalks every year prevents the center of the plant from becoming cluttered and improves airflow to ward off powdery mildew.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as soon as you see the first green shoots emerge from the soil. Provide full sun or partial shade for your Hardy Hibiscus because these perennials flower better with more sun. Plant them in well-drained soil that quickly dries out after rainfall. Their adaptability to occasionally wet and dry soils is incredible, but they do best with consistent watering and will keep your plant stress-free. Apply a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the top of the roots, pulling them back away from the roots.

As flowers are done, remove them for a more manicured look, then in early spring, trim down all the stems to the ground. Watch for the new growth to come up from the roots. Please be patient, as they are one of the last plants to start growing in spring.
