Where to Plant

Sunlight: These gardenias perform best with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct morning sun. While they can tolerate partial shade in the afternoon, too much shade will result in fewer blooms and a leggy growth habit.
Soil: They crave rich, acidic soil that drains quickly to prevent root rot. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost or peat moss to improve drainage and lower the pH level.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy by watering deeply twice a week. Once established, August Beauty can handle brief dry spells, but inconsistent moisture often causes unopened flower buds to drop prematurely. Focus your watering at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry and prevent fungal issues.

Pruning Tips

Since these shrubs bloom on "old wood" from the previous season, you should only prune them immediately after the final flowers fade in summer. Use clean shears to shape the plant or remove dead tips, which encourages fresh growth for next year's blossoms. Avoid pruning in late fall or winter because you will accidentally cut off the developing flower buds for the coming spring.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a granular, acid-loving plant fertilizer twice a year, once in early spring and again in late June. Preferring the morning sun and a touch of shade in the hottest southern sun, however, shrugs off the high humidity of the south with ease! Water well while they're establishing, and plant in organically rich, well-draining soils. Mulch the base of your plant to keep the roots stress-free and keep the foliage cleaner and problem-free. Prune after the flowers fade in the summer.
