My plant came and looked great with an actual flower blooming on it

My plant came and looked great with an actual flower blooming on it. However after a day leaves starting to turn yellow. I discovered that the plant was definitely root bound. I left it because I was afraid to transplant it so soon after delivery. I have now transplanted it into a bigger container and it's doing somewhat better, but some leaves are still turning yellow. I'm keeping it as a house plant because it definitely would not grow outside in our zip code of 40245 even though you shipped it knowing my zone. I have it in a sun room which has plenty of light. I also have geraniums in my sun room that I keep year round. Right now I'm disappointed, but will wait and see how it does in the next few months.

The plant was gorgeous when

The plant was gorgeous when I received it and eventually put on 5 flowers, but then started dying. The leaves curled like it needed water, but I was watering it every other day with water standing in the saucer, but the leaves still curled. I wish it could be replaced. I really loved it.

Hi Cherri,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your plant. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that it started struggling after blossoming beautifully—it sounds like you gave it great care, watering it regularly, but the curled leaves suggest there might be an underlying issue causing stress.

Standing water in the saucer can sometimes lead to root rot, as the roots may remain too wet, depriving them of oxygen. We recommend allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings and emptying any excess water from the saucer after about 30 minutes. Also, ensuring your plant receives the appropriate amount of light and is kept in a well-draining pot can make a huge difference.

We’d be happy to help further or discuss the possibility of replacing your plant under our satisfaction guarantees. Please reach out to our Customer Care team anytime—we truly want you to love the green addition to your home.

Looking forward to supporting your gardening journey!

Dear Cherri,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We're truly sorry to hear that your beautiful plant started struggling after putting on flowers—that can be really disappointing, especially when you’ve given it such good care.

From what you described, the curled leaves might indicate that leaving water standing in the saucer could have triggered root health issues, such as root rot, even if you were watering regularly. Many plants prefer their soil to dry out a bit between waterings, and standing water can sometimes suffocate roots. We recommend after each watering, draining any excess water to help the roots breathe better. Also, checking if the soil has proper drainage and wasn’t tightly packed might be a good step.

We’d love to make this right for you. Please contact our Customer Service team directly through the link on your order confirmation or call us so we can discuss the possibility of a replacement and offer care pointers specific to your plant variety to help it thrive.

Thank you again for your honest feedback and your love for the plant—it means a lot to us!

Dear Tinka,

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We're delighted to hear that your Frost Proof Gardenia arrived looking large and beautiful, and that it has plenty of buds ready to bloom. Planting it in a big pot is a fantastic choice—it gives the roots plenty of room to grow strong and healthy.

As your gardenia settles into its new home, be sure to keep it in a bright spot with protection from harsh afternoon sun, and maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging the soil. Fertilizing in early spring with an acid-loving plant formula can also encourage thriving blooms. Frequently Asked Questions

What USDA hardiness zones can Pillow Talk® Gardenia survive in?

  • Pillow Talk® Gardenia is hardy in USDA zones 7-8. This compact shrub cannot tolerate freezing temperatures below what's typical in these warmer zones. Plant in a sheltered location to protect from cold winds and ensure the best survival in zone 7.

How tall and wide will Pillow Talk® Gardenia get when fully mature?

  • Pillow Talk® Gardenia reaches 2-4 feet tall and wide at maturity, forming a compact mounding shape. This tidy growth habit makes it ideal for containers and foundation plantings without heavy pruning. Shop at Nature Hills for this perfectly sized fragrant shrub.

Does Pillow Talk® Gardenia need full sun or can it tolerate partial shade?

  • Pillow Talk® Gardenia thrives in partial to full sun conditions. This adaptable shrub performs well with 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily, though it appreciates some afternoon shade in hot climates. Plant it where it receives morning sun for best blooming performance.

What type of soil does Pillow Talk® Gardenia prefer - acidic or alkaline?

  • Pillow Talk® Gardenia requires acidic soil with a pH between 5.0-6.5. Alkaline soil will cause nutrient deficiencies and poor flowering performance. Test your soil pH before planting and amend with sulfur or peat moss if needed to achieve the proper acidity level.

Is Pillow Talk® Gardenia a fast-growing or slow-growing shrub?

  • Pillow Talk® Gardenia is a moderate grower, reaching its mature size of 2-4 feet in 3-4 years. This compact habit means minimal pruning maintenance once established in Zones 7-8. Shop at Nature Hills for this low-maintenance beauty.

Will deer eat Pillow Talk® Gardenia or is it deer resistant?

  • Gardenias are generally deer resistant due to their strong fragrance and bitter taste. The intensely fragrant blooms of Pillow Talk® Gardenia make it an unlikely target for deer browsing. Plant it near walkways or patios where you'll enjoy the classic gardenia scent while benefiting from natural deer deterrence.

Can Pillow Talk® Gardenia be grown in containers or does it need to be planted in the ground?

  • Pillow Talk® Gardenia grows beautifully in containers and stays compact at just 2-4 feet tall and wide. Its mounding habit makes it ideal for patios and entryways where you can enjoy the intense fragrance up close. Use well-draining, acidic potting mix and keep soil consistently moist for best blooming performance.
