Understanding Our Container Sizes

At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

What to expect: About the size of a large coffee can. A well-developed root system in a manageable size. Good value choice when you have time to let the plant grow into the space over a season or two.

#2 Container

Plant age: 2 to 3 years
Best for: Shrubs and trees where you want faster establishment
What to expect: A noticeable step up from a #1 in both plant size and root development. Good choice when you want visible presence without going to a larger size.

#3 Container

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

Your Moonshadow Wintercreeper Euonymus (Euonymus fortunei 'Moonshadow') is an adorable little shrub with a lot to offer for its diminutive size! Its broadleaf evergreen nature ensures that you'll enjoy its appearance year-round, and the decorative foliage will provide an added benefit over other small evergreens in your landscape!

When you see your Moonshadow, you'll immediately notice the foliage. Each oval, serrated leaf features a yellow center framed by glossy green. When the foliage is young, the yellow has a more muted appearance, darkening with age. This gives your Moonshadow a somewhat multi-toned appearance that will be a stand-out for your summer landscape!

Spring has tiny little greenish-yellow blooms that the pollinators will seek out, but they won't be that showy. When fall arrives, your Moonshadow stems turn red and the foliage takes on a pink tone. This dense, compact, and evergreen shrub tends to stay low and compact, with a somewhat rounded habit.

Planting and Application:

Moonshadow Euonymus is an evergreen shrub or creeper with ornamental foliage. Plant several as a low hedge, or just one as an accent for your perennial bed. These would also do well as container plants for your front porch.

Unlike some other varieties, Moonshadow will form a slow-growing mat that won't need to be pruned often to maintain its form. Create lovely little low hedges and garden-defining edging! Replace more troublesome hedging plants like Boxwood and Privet without having to shear and prune them to keep them in check. Or, plant them near a vertical support and they can be trained upwards if preferred. They love protection from winter winds in the colder zones and protection from the hot afternoon sun in the warmer zones.

Run a ribbon of color as a facer plant along your foundation planting or before an older hedge that may be getting leggy and have bare stems, covering them up with two-tone beauty. Shear into little balls and pot them up in fancy planters for a formal effect year-round!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Growing throughout a wide range of USDA growing zones from 4 to 8, Moonshadow is tolerant of most soil conditions (except overly moist), and grows in the sun or even a touch of shade. Plant in a well-drained location with regular moisture access. Once established, your shrub will become fairly drought-tolerant. These compact little gems won't need much maintenance and can be sheared or left to grow naturally after that first flush of growth in the spring. All plants love mulch around their roots.

I received 4 plants that I ordered, in good condition. Even though I waited two days to open it, due to having company, they were in great shape. I planted them according to the directions about three weeks ago. They are doing well. I am anxious to see them grow. I planted them in a retaining wall, so they will stand out and I’m sure will be very pretty. I ordered the plants a few weeks before I wanted them, because they had a limited number in stock.
