Where to Plant

Sunlight: Give your Elodi™ at least six hours of direct sun daily for the best flower production. While it tolerates afternoon shade, expect slightly fewer blooms or colors that are less intense. A key tip is to shade its roots, keeping them cool with mulch or low-growing perennials while the top growth enjoys the sun.
Soil: This Clematis prefers well-drained, rich soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. If you have heavy clay, amend the hole heavily with compost and some coarse grit to improve drainage; waterlogged roots are fatal. For sandy soil, mix in plenty of organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure to help it retain consistent moisture.

Watering Requirements

During the first establishment year, water deeply and consistently, especially during dry spells, to encourage a robust root system. Once mature, Elodi™ is reasonably tough, but inconsistent watering will stress the plant, leading to smaller, less impressive blooms and potential leaf drop. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy, soaking the base of the plant every seven to ten days in the absence of rain.

Pruning Tips

Elodi™ Clematis is a Group 2 variety, meaning it blooms on both old wood first and new wood later, allowing for two flushes of flowers. In early spring, just as the buds begin to swell, perform a light trim: remove any dead, damaged, or weak stems, cutting back to the first set of strong, healthy buds. After the first flush of spring flowers fades, you can prune the spent blooms back to a strong leaf node to encourage the second, summer wave of flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed your vine twice a year using a balanced, granular fertilizer formulated for flowering plants, like a good rose fertilizer, or a specialty Clematis formula. Apply the first dose in early spring when you prune and the second after the first big bloom cycle to fuel the second flush. What to avoid: Do not apply high nitrogen fertilizer after mid-summer, as this encourages soft new growth that can be easily damaged by early winter cold, rather than letting the plant naturally harden off.

Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.
