Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Fanal Astilbe performs best in partial to full shade, requiring about 2 to 4 hours of dappled sunlight. While it can handle more sun in cooler climates, too much direct light will scorch the delicate foliage and cause the crimson flower plumes to fade prematurely.
  • Soil: These plants crave rich, organic soil that stays consistently moist but never waterlogged. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost or peat moss to improve drainage; for sandy soil, add organic matter to help hold onto the moisture these "heavy drinkers" require.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Astilbe twice a week to ensure the root system establishes deeply. Mature plants are not drought tolerant and will develop crispy, brown leaf edges if the soil dries out. Keep the ground consistently moist, especially during the heat of midsummer, to maintain the vibrant color of the blooms and the health of the lacy foliage.

Pruning Tips

Fanal Astilbe blooms on new wood, so you should leave the spent flower stalks standing through winter to provide visual interest and protect the crown. In early spring, before new growth emerges, cut the old stems and foliage back to ground level. This "spring cleaning" makes room for fresh stems and prevents old debris from harboring pests or diseases.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as soon as you see new sprouts poking through the soil. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages tender new growth that will be easily killed by the first frost. A simple top dressing of compost each year is often enough to keep the soil nutrient dense and the blooms prolific.

The garnet-red Fanal Astilbe (Astilbe x arendsii 'Fanal') is a colorful feathery bloomer, with new foliage appearing mahogany before aging into a lacy deep green/bronze-green for the summer! The crinkled leaves form textured mounds that stand out beautifully!

Pollinators adore these foamy blooms as do hummingbirds! You'll love seeing these flowers show off in the shade garden and your bouquets indoors! As autumn approaches, the blooms turn to shades of brown that look wonderful in winter snowscapes. Growing about 2 feet in height and width, Fanal is wonderfully cold-hardy!

Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 8, Astilbe are deer resistant and even rabbits leave them alone unless desperate. Flowering all summer, you'll love these cold-hardy and heat-resistant plants in your landscape!

Landscape Application:

The lacy foliage mounds look great all on their own before the flowers arrive in the summer! Adding lacy edging and showy front of the garden filler! Add pops of hot pinkish-red flowers in groupings throughout shaded woodland borders and pollinator gardens beneath a large tree canopy. Perfect for cottage gardens and the outskirts of Rain Gardens!

Plant it in perennial borders or shade gardens with Hostas and Ferns, mixing beautifully with Bleeding Hearts, Foam Flowers and Leopard Plants! They of course look great with other Astilbe! Both in the ground and in planters, Astilble shows off in your shaded gardens, patios, and planters.

  • Pinkish- Garnet-Red Plume-Like Flowers
  • Colorful Blue-Green With Bronze-Green Overtones
  • Low-Growing Mounded Clumps of Crinkled Fine-Cut Leaves
  • Blooms Mid Summer For Pollinators & Hummingbirds
  • Containers, Great Border & Edging Plants, Groupings & Massing

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Fanal is most successfully grown in a shady and partly shaded area but can tolerate some morning sun. A moist, well-drained area is a key factor for growing a healthy plant. Do not allow Astilbe to dry out and topdress with a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch to help hold in moisture. In order to keep Astilbe looking good for the next year, do not cut it back in the winter, (the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage), but prune back in early spring.

  • Full Shade In Hot Climates, Part Shade Everywhere
  • Must Have Well-Drained Soil But Tolerates Clay
  • Prefers Regular Moisture Access To Higher Moisture
  • Prune These Herbaceous Perennials In Early Spring
  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant

Showy garden jewels, the garnet-hued Fanal Astilbe is hardy, resistant, tough, and pest-free! Order your own today at NatureHills.com and enjoy these gorgeous perennials!
