Where to Plant

Sunlight: This barberry performs best in full sun, which means at least six hours of direct light daily. While it can handle partial shade, you will notice the bright gold foliage begins to fade into a lime green color without enough sun.
Soil: It thrives in well drained soil and is not picky about pH levels. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" or soggy roots can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Gold Pillar Barberry twice a week to help the root system reach deep into the soil. Once the plant is established, it is remarkably drought tolerant and usually only needs supplemental water during extreme heat waves. If you let it get too dry before it is mature, you might see some leaf scorch or premature dropping of the golden foliage.

Pruning Tips

Since this shrub naturally grows in a narrow, upright column, it requires very little pruning to maintain its shape. If you need to tidy it up, do so in late winter or very early spring before new growth starts because it blooms on old wood. At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

The Sunjoy Gold Pillar® Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Maria') by Proven Winners® ColorChoice® is a deciduous shrub with brilliant foliage. Growing in a wide columnar fashion, it would look great as a short hedge or border along a walkway! Particularly prized for its bright, yellow foliage that maintains its brilliance all summer long. The one-inch leaves emerge in scarlet raiment when spring arrives then quickly adopt their golden glory.

Light-yellow flowers appear in the spring, but you may not notice them. They will however be useful in drawing pollinators to your yard! Big fat bumblebees will be dangling from them all spring! When fall approaches Gold Pillar® briefly returns to its red origins again, but this time with a decidedly brighter, orange hue as well, which is quite spectacular to behold.

Barberry has a long history of medicinal uses dating back over 2,000 years. It's also sometimes used cosmetically and even in some crafts. These are low-maintenance and easy-to-care-for columnar shrubs for a wide range of growing zones! Planting and Application:

These narrower plants make perfect hedges and property definition without taking up any room! Staying small and narrow, they are great screening and low privacy that also adds phenomenal color! Those thorns make anyone, or anything, think twice before crossing your hedge. Narrow enough to add a pop of color among existing mixed-shrub borders and to really highlight your home's front foundation!

Gold Pillar® is very adaptable and tolerant of many conditions, so won't require a lot of care from you. Another useful feature of this particular cultivar is that it won't suffer leaf scorch like some other yellow Barberry will, making it a superior selection among Barberry choices. Any type of well-drained, slightly acidic soil with average moisture access is perfect for these shrubs!

Pruning after flowering, or shear into a more formal shape. But little pruning is required unless you wish to change its shape or overall size. Wear thick, leather gloves before working with Barberry! In early spring, use a fertilizer formula for acid-loving plants according to label directions. Add a thick 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch, pine bark, or pine straw mulch over the root system, which will also help keep the soil slightly acidic and retain soil moisture.
