Beautiful and fragrant blooms!💗

I put one of the gardenias in a pot and it seems to be doing very well. The other I put in the ground and some of its leaves are turning yellow. They both had wonderful smelling gardenia flowers when I got them. I am very happy with them as I have loved the smell of gardenias since the day I saw a patients in a hospital with them. I guess I fell in love with the scent. Thank you for the plants!!!!

Beautiful flower, just wish I could grow them in my zone.(4)

Hi Mike,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us! We’re delighted to hear you find the flower beautiful. We understand how tough it can be to grow certain plants in Zone 4, which can have a shorter and cooler growing season. If you’re open to trying a couple of ideas, consider starting seeds indoors early or growing in containers that you can bring indoors during colder spells. Additionally, check out our website’s planting guides tailored for each zone—they have helpful tips to extend your growing season or select more hardy alternatives.

If you'd like, we can also recommend some stunning, cold-hardy varieties that will thrive beautifully in Zone 4 and bring vibrant color to your garden.

Wishing you happy planting,

Frequently Asked Questions

What USDA planting zones is the August Beauty Gardenia suitable for?

  • August Beauty Gardenia thrives in USDA zones 8 through 11. This evergreen shrub needs the warmth of these southern zones to perform at its best. Plant in a sunny location where temperatures don't drop below the zone 8 minimum of 10-20°F.

How large does the August Beauty Gardenia grow at maturity?

  • August Beauty Gardenia reaches 3-5 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide at maturity. This compact size makes it perfect for foundation plantings, walkway borders, or container growing. Plant it where you can enjoy the fragrance up close, available at naturehills.com.

How often should I water August Beauty Gardenia, especially in hot weather?

  • August Beauty Gardenias need consistent moisture but well-draining soil to prevent root rot. In hot weather, water deeply 2-3 times per week rather than daily shallow watering. Check soil moisture by inserting your finger 2 inches down - water when dry at that depth.

Does August Beauty Gardenia require acidic fertilizer, and what type?

  • August Beauty Gardenia thrives with acidic fertilizer designed for acid-loving plants like azaleas and camellias. These zone 8-11 shrubs prefer a pH between 5.0-6.0 for optimal bloom production. Feed monthly during growing season with an acid fertilizer containing iron and magnesium.

What is the hardiness level of August Beauty Gardenia in cold climates?

  • August Beauty Gardenia is hardy in USDA zones 8-11, making it unsuitable for cold climates below zone 8. This southern beauty needs warm temperatures year-round to thrive. For colder regions, consider growing it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter, available at naturehills.com.

Can August Beauty Gardenia be grown in containers or pots?

  • August Beauty Gardenia grows well in containers and makes an excellent container plant. At 3-5 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, it fits nicely in large pots in zones 8-11. Place containers where you can enjoy the fragrance near patios or entrances.

When should I prune August Beauty Gardenia to ensure blooming?

  • Prune August Beauty Gardenia immediately after its main flush of blooms finishes in late summer. Since this reblooming variety sets buds for next year's flowers shortly after blooming, avoid fall or winter pruning which removes flower buds. Light shaping in late summer maintains its 3-5 foot mature size while preserving next season's fragrant blooms.

Does August Beauty Gardenia tolerate full sun or partial shade?

  • August Beauty Gardenia thrives in full sun conditions throughout USDA zones 8-11. These plants "shine in the sun" and produce their most fragrant blooms with ample sunlight. Plant in a sunny location near walkways or entrances where you can fully enjoy the intoxicating fragrance.

Is August Beauty Gardenia deer resistant or pet friendly?

  • August Beauty Gardenia is not deer resistant and is toxic to pets if ingested. Gardenias contain compounds that can cause digestive upset in dogs and cats. Plant this zone 8-11 shrub away from pet areas and consider fencing if deer are problematic in your garden.
