The Green Spice Coral Bells (Heuchera 'Green Spice'), also known as Alum Root and Crimson Bells, is a vigorous growing variety with excellent leaf color contrast; the large, dark gray-edged, silver leaves have deep purple veining.

The petite, delicate summer-blooming flowers are cream-white colored and provide additional contrast against the unique dark hues of the foliage. These spring blossoms attract beneficial pollinators and butterflies! Even Hummingbirds will arrive to sip the nectar and flit between the bell-shaped blooms! Plus these graceful bell-shaped blooms are lovely in floral bouquets!

Also known as Alumroot, easy to grow, the Green Spice Coral Bells exhibit excellent growth qualities and are more shade tolerant than most hybrid Coral Bells. This variety can be evergreen in warmer climates, and a herbaceous perennial in colder areas of USDA growing zones 4 to 8 and grows into spreading, low-growing mounds 8-16 inches tall and 24-28 inches wide.

Planting and Application:

The Green Spice Heuchera can be used in many different space-saving applications, including as ground cover or planted in hanging baskets, beds, and window boxes. Try them in containers on your patio, or along a shaded garden perennial border. This Heuchera is also a fantastic spiller in container gardening and Balcony gardens too!

A pollinator-friendly variety, the Green Spice Coral Bells is attractive to butterflies and other beneficial insects, but typically ignored by pesky deer. Making them ideal to use en masse as groundcovers, to fill hard-to-mow hillsides and along wildlife borders, and in shaded locations where deer and rabbits may be present. Add to perennial borders and Rock Gardens, and of course, these mix fantastically among other Coral Bells!

  • Bold Green Foliage With Silvery Overlay & Gray Edges
  • Contrasting Foliage - Deep Purple Prominent Veins & Pointed Lobed Foliage
  • Dainty Little Bell-Shaped Creamy White Blooms
  • Great Cut Flowers & Pollinator Friendly
  • Great Groundcover & Container Plants, Edging & Border Plants

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Coral Bells perform best in part shade, rich, humusy, medium moisture, and well-drained soil. In cooler climates, Heuchera can grow in full sun. Make sure the soil remains consistently moist or the foliage might decline. Heuchera is easy to grow, but somewhat susceptible to root rot, so good drainage is essential while the roots establish themselves. While they are adaptable to different soil types, well-drained soil, and moderate moisture are best for these Perennials.

In any situation, add a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to hold in moisture and keep the roots cool. Deadhead after the flowers fade and prune down the foliage in the early spring. Then every 3-5 years, divide clumps in the fall to keep the clumps growing vigorously. Requiring little maintenance, Heuchera are usually pest and disease free. As clump-forming plants, it's recommended to divide them every 3 to 4 years, to prevent overcrowding and ensure the best growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prune Coral Bells?

Coral Bells do best when pruned in the early spring. Leaving the foliage intact as an extra blanket for winter protection over the crown. In some climates, Coral Bells can be semi-evergreen, so leaving those colorful leaves up all winter adds winter interest!

Do Coral Bells prefer sun or shade?

Coral Bells need partial sun/shade or full shade in warmer climates. They do best in the morning sun to dry the leaves of dew and afternoon shade to provide relief from the hot summer sun.

Do Coral Bells spread?

Coral Bells can spread into tidy mounds about 2-3 feet in width but do not spread by rhizomes or stolons further than where they're planted.

Where do Coral Bells grow best?

Coral Bells love a shaded site in enriched soil that is well-drained. They appreciate regular moisture and a mulched root zone.

Do Coral Bells attract hummingbirds?

Coral Bells are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.

What pairs with Coral Bells?

These shade-loving perennials pair with lacy Astilbe and Ferns, other coarse foliage plants like Hosta, and the lobed foliage of Columbines! Try pairing with Barrenworts and Bergenia too!
