Cool, calm, and showy color all season long, Prairie Sky Hosta (Hosta x 'Prairie Sky') is a standout addition! Large, rounded, powdery blue, lightly cupped leaves have a slightly corrugated texture and unearthly color among the cool shade!

These lovely glaucous leaves stand out in the dappled shade and understory of large trees and seem to accent dark-leafed shrubs and flowers wonderfully! By mid-summer, trumpet-shaped, pale lavender flower scapes add height, drama, and Hummingbirds to the garden while the glaucous foliage is soothing and charismatic everywhere!

Hardy to cold, heat, and humidity throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9, Prairie Sky grows to around 15 inches in height and spread nearly 3 feet wide with silvery splendor! Remarkably easy to grow, even the most novice or busiest of gardeners can find success with these low-maintenance perennial ornamentals!

Planting and Application:

The calming effect of Prairie Sky creates an amazing specimen or focal point! Mix with other Hosta leaf colors, create a cool background structure, or highlight shrubs and trees with this unique coloration! Pairing wonderfully with other shade-loving plants like the finely-textured Fern or Astilbe, the cool blue hue goes great with the vivid colors of Coral Bells too!

Accent any structure, seating area, or sculptural with a curved row or skirting of these hefty plants around the base. Loving the shade that larger trees and shrubs create, a skirt or ring of Hosta around their bases adds a finishing touch to your plantings while hiding their bare leggy lower stems as lush facer plants.

Shade gardens, perennial beds, or walkways look amazing with these edging plants and their frosty leaves. Highlight a shaded pathway, or line a shaded drive with easy care and easy-going perennials that look great all growing season! You'll call butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden and even accent larger planters and tubs around your covered porches and decks!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hosta are hardy perennials in USDA growing zones 3 through 9 are very cold hardy perennials. Highly filtered or dappled sunlight is necessary for lush, healthy growth. The morning sun is tolerable and helps to intensify the leaf colors, but the hot afternoon sun is usually deadly to Hostas!

Highly resistant to heat and humidity long as they're given adequate shade and moisture, especially throughout the hottest part of the growing season. Tolerant of dry shade once established, these become incredibly resilient! Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soils that are highly organic. Preferring a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

Low maintenance and easy care, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
