Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones
The Winecraft Black® Smokebush (Cotinus coggygria 'NCCo1') is the first-ever Smokebush that has survived the rigorous trials it takes to become a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® selection, so you know that it has to be the cream of the crop! That's just one of the many reasons to love this new introduction to the gardening world. Here are a few more:
The spring leaves emerge rich plum purple and turn to deep almost-back as the summer heats up. In early summer big fluffy panicles of the tiniest blooms appear that turn into the misty "smoke" that gives the plant its unusual name (and unusual look!). In the fall the leaves light up in an unexpected display of oranges and reds.
Unlike other Smoke Bush varieties, Winecraft Black® stays small and naturally rounded. It doesn't get huge and out-of-bounds. It is perfect for any size garden, space-saving, from big country gardens to small urban gardens and everything in between.
Planting and Application:
Perfectly sized for small properties and urban courtyards, Winecraft Black® is equally ideal for containers along your sunny patio or porch. Plant evenly spaced multiple plants in large planters to create easy screening around pools, seating areas, and barbecue pits for fiery color all growing season!
Massed together, Winecraft Black® makes a show-stopping low hedge or mass planting, especially when in full-on 'smoke' mode! Low-growing enough to be incredible foundation plantings or backdrops to other landscape beds, these fantastic accents show off as street trees, front berm specimens, and showy garden bed focal points both in their shrub form or as small trees!
- Kaleidoscope Foliage - Purple to Black
- Dramatic Airy Plumes Of Purple Blooms
- Glowing Fall Colors!
- Naturally Dwarf - Fits Any Garden
- Unique Hedge or Foundation Planting, Specimens & Container Focal Points
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Smokebush requires full sun to have this glorious color! Tough and tolerant shrubs that tolerate drought and dry soil once it is established. Provide regular moisture for young plants until they get established. These can be late to leaf out in spring, but once they do, they will become a knock-out specimen shrub!
Apply a 3-inch layer of wood chip mulch around the plant to keep the root system cool and moist. These deciduous shrubs prefer good air circulation is another important consideration. Please don't plant too close to buildings, fences, or walls. Allow this shrub to reach its full glory and prune these shrubs in the early spring only. You don't have to prune it for it to keep its naturally dwarf appearance, but if you do give yours a trim, do so only in the late winter or very early spring.
- Full Sun For The Most Color
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Prune In Early Spring
- Deer Resistant & Hardy USDA 4 to 8
