A true supermodel of the shrub world - the Maries Doublefile Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii') is nicknamed the Wedding Cake Viburnum, and it's easy to see why with its layers upon layers of horizontal branches stacked atop each other. Mariesii Viburnum is widely regarded as the most attractive shrub by experts! When in bloom and bespeckled with butterflies and bees, it becomes almost magical!

In spring, each branch is loaded with a double row of flat-topped clusters of white lacecap flowers. The two-inch clusters line each branch to completely cover the shrub from top to bottom. Well-organized, toothed, dark green leaves look almost quilted! Evenly spaced prominent veins angle off from the mid-rib to create a pleated look on the upper surface. Even after leaf drop, the horizontal tiered branches look great when bare for winter.

Mariesii Doublefile Viburnum is a handsome shrub that develops a trim, rounded shape and is adaptable and easy-going throughout USDA hardiness zones 5 through 8. Eye-catching red fruits develop from the double rows of white flowers. Songbirds will enjoy them as a nutrient-rich resource food before winter. In most areas, you'll enjoy a lovely fall color display of rich red and purple foliage. The show starts once the nights start getting cooler.

Planting and Application:

Use a single shrub as a bold focal point. Or, plant a row of them to become a wonderfully showy, flowering backdrop that doubles as privacy. Add a stunning, architectural shrub front and center in your landscape design. These wide-spreading, medium-sized shrubs are a delightful way to accent the start of a garden path or other points of transition in your landscape.

Use one as an accent by the corner of your garage to elevate the entry into your side yard. Add a pretty row along the edge of a woodland garden to mark the boundary between domestication and wilderness. The birds and wildlife will certainly appreciate the habitat, food and nesting sites. You'll appreciate the extra branches that you won't feel as guilty when snipping for your indoor vase bouquets!

The symmetry of Maries Doublefile Viburnum also makes a memorable hedge. Relax with the even tempo of their horizontal branches. Create a beautiful backdrop for your mixed garden borders. Or, place several behind your patio furniture as an outstanding privacy screen. Plant three shrubs in an open semicircle, then add a seating arrangement to welcome guests for coffee.

This special shrub looks amazing in a fusion Asian-style garden but holds its own in casual contemporary settings as well. How about using one of these glorious ornamentals for lighting up your Moon Garden? Maries Doublefile Viburnum earns the right to showcase your style in front yard settings for maximum curb appeal! If you have the space, add a long row along the front of your property or to decorate a wider side yard. You'll make the world a prettier place!

  • Very Showy White Lacecap Flower Clusters Display Atop Each Branch
  • Pollinator Support Plant & Lovely Red Fruit for Songbirds
  • Highly Textured, Dark-Green Foliage & Wide-Spreading, Horizontal Branches
  • Leaves Turn Burgundy Reddish-Purple for Fall Color in Most Areas
  • Incredible Formal & Informal Hedge, Specimen, Backdrop & Habitat

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This variety of easy-care Viburnum will perform in either full sun or part shade. It needs at least four hours of direct sunlight a day. Well-drained soil is best. Elevate your shrubs in a raised bed if your soil retains water. Establish your plant with careful watering during its first season. Thereafter, provide a medium amount of water on a regular basis. Mulch over the root system to cut down on surface evaporation. Apply a three-inch layer, but keep it pulled back from the main stems.

After the flowers are finished in late spring, prune lightly to shape. Plan for the full height and spread of this shrub, so you never have to prune. But if you do give them a trim to shape, do so as needed immediately after flowering because blooms develop on this year's wood. You can also skip tip pruning and renewal prune instead to have fruit for birds. Remove the largest, thickest stems from the ground every few years. Leave the young stems in place, which will flower nicely for you next spring.

If you live with deer in your area, apply repellent spray on the day of planting. Reapply according to the directions. Plant with other Doublefile Viburnum to maximize pollination and increase fruit production for your feathered friends!

  • Full Sun or Partial Shade
  • Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soil Types
  • Average to Higher Moisture Needs & Appreciates Mulched Beds
