Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This daylily performs best in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct light to produce the highest quantity of its distinct, triangular blooms. While it can survive in partial shade, insufficient light will result in leggy foliage and significantly fewer flowers.
  • Soil: Plant in soil that drains well, as soggy roots can be fatal to this perennial. If you are gardening in heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost or shredded leaves to improve drainage and aeration, or consider planting in a raised bed where moisture levels are easier to control.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist for the first year to help the fleshy root system establish itself in your garden. Once established, this plant is quite drought tolerant, but providing about an inch of water per week during the blooming season will ensure the flowers remain large and the foliage stays lush without browning at the tips.

Pruning Tips

Remove the entire flower stalk, or scape, all the way to the base once all the buds on that stem have finished blooming to keep the clump looking tidy. In late fall after a hard frost kills the foliage, cut all the leaves down to a few inches above the ground to prevent pests and diseases from overwintering in the debris.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a top-dressing of compost around the base of the plant in early spring as new green shoots begin to emerge. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, especially late in the season, because they promote excessive leafy growth at the expense of flower production.
