Frequently Asked Questions

Does Pink Pony elderberry need a pollinator to make berries?

  • Yes. Pink Pony™ needs another Sambucus nigra elderberry nearby to set fruit. Black Lace® or Laced Up® elderberry both work well and share the same dark foliage, so the pair looks good together. Without a partner it still flowers, but you will see few or no berries.

Are Pink Pony elderberry berries edible?

  • Elderberries from Sambucus nigra are traditionally used in jams, jellies, syrups and pies. The leaves, stems, roots and seeds contain compounds that can make people sick, so use only ripe berries prepared with a trusted recipe, and keep pets from eating any part of the plant.

Why are my Pink Pony elderberry leaves turning green?

  • The purple-black color is strongest in cool summer climates. In hot areas, Pink Pony™ may grow greener leaves through the heat of summer. A spot with afternoon shade and steady moisture helps it hold its dark color.

When should I prune Pink Pony elderberry?

  • Prune right after it finishes blooming. It flowers on old wood, so pruning later removes next year's blooms. If you mainly want the dark foliage, you can cut it to the ground each spring and grow it like a perennial, but you will lose that year's flowers and berries.

Can you ship Pink Pony elderberry to Oregon?

  • No. We do not ship elderberry to Oregon because of state plant regulations. Our checkout blocks Oregon addresses for this plant so no order ships where it is not allowed.
