Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Some things are destined to become classics - The Pontiac Trans-Am, circa 1970; the "little black dress"; The Wizard of Oz. We're not overstating it to say that we firmly believe the Laced Up® Elderberry PP29,051 (Sambucus nigra 'SNR1292') from Proven Winners® ColorChoice® will soon be added to that list!

This new form of strait-laced Elderberry takes everything you've loved about the airy, joyful, award-winning Proven Winners® Black Lace® and Black Beauty® Elderberries and creates a columnar accent better suited to modern urban gardens and small-space landscaping!

By nature, Elderberries are exuberant growers, often becoming very large plants. Unfortunately, if you love them, but also love the current trend of small spaces, you were out of luck.

Until now!

New for 2018, Laced Up® is a more columnar form of European Sambucus that is perfect for smaller spaces. It doesn't take up much space as it shoots up into a fluffy column of gorgeous dark, feathery foliage that adds motion and texture!

Just like its larger cousins, Laced Up® has foamy flat-topped pink blossoms that are fantastic landing pads for pollinators and beneficial insects alike! These summer flower clusters later become sought-after glossy black berries that birds and humans love!

If you plant a Sambucus nigra pollinator partner nearby you'll also get loads of the namesake Elderberries following the flowers. Full of vitamins and medicinal qualities, cook the berries with sweetener to make fabulous wine and tasty syrups, flavoring, and preserves. But because birds and wildlife rely on these juicy dark little berries, plant a couple of these shrubs so everyone can partake!

Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 7, this dark foliage shrub adds depth and dimension while not sacrificing space, growing just 4-6 feet wide but 6-10 feet in height! You can easily 'limb up' this selection to create a unique multi-trunked tree form by exposing the lower trunks!

Planting and Application:

Planting this upscale and colorful Elderberry is also a sneaky way to include Edible Landscaping in your front yard foundation plantings! Try pairing Laced Up® as corner accents and astride your front steps, with Black Lace® along the front of your home! Plant a matching hedge along the front of your yard to screen from the street. The dark foliage is sure to slow traffic!

Consider this plant as a living sculpture! Laced Up® looks amazing in a container or flanking an entryway in a high-style urn, letting you know that the pathway you are about to enter holds something special beyond. A single specimen in a large planter makes a fantastic and quirky statement as a specimen plant in a garden bed or around a sunny patio!

The lush, ferny dark foliage beckons, and the fresh lemony scent of the wide clusters of tiny, precious, fragrant pink flowers enchant you and your guests, while the berries in the summer bring in the songbirds! They'll behave as a perfectly chic flowering and fruiting backdrop to so many other plants! The outstanding, wispy texture of the deep leaves makes everything else 'pop' that is planted before it!

Use several of these narrow-growing plants in a curving row to effortlessly create a marvelously organic flowering hedge around your patio. It provides an airy sense of privacy and elevates the look of your space or creates a private outdoor garden room. You'll beautifully extend the height and improve the looks of any landscape fence.

For a sheared or natural hedge, plant them 4 - 5 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. If you want to show off individual plants, give them 3-4 feet apart for some wiggle room. Use several across your property line for privacy and to hide a nosy neighbor while feeding and sheltering birds!

  • Dramatic Dark Foliage Color
  • Unmatched Lacy Fine-Cut Leaf Texture
  • Head-Turning Soft Pink Summer Flowers
  • Black, Glossy Edible Fall Berries
  • Columnar Form - Uses Less Space
  • Wonderful Specimens Mass Planting, Hedges & Dramatic Landscape Color!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant it in full sun for the best color and vigor! Plant your shrub in a location that is well-drained and give it regular water. These shrubs do best with a thick layer of mulch for consistent surface moisture and to keep the root system cool in the heat of the summer. Apply 3 to 4 inches of an acidic mulch out 4 feet from the center of the plant. Feed with Acid-Lovers Fertilizer.

Remember that flowering occurs on last year's wood, so if you want fruit, you should not prune Elderberry until after they flower. But this forgiving deciduous shrub is complimented by hard pruning. You can also renewal prune Elderberry to keep the vigorous younger shoots returning by removing the oldest, fattest stems every 3 years. This way you will not have to miss a moment of those flowers or fruit!

  • Grows in Full Sun or Partial Shade
  • Highly Adaptable to Any Well-Drained Soil Type
  • Thrives In Moist to Dry Conditions Once Established
  • Flowers On Old Wood - Prune After Flowering - Can Be Tightly Pruned
  • Very Easy Care & Fast-Growing!

Need a space-saving Elderberry that stands up and commands attention? Order the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Laced Up® Elderberry bush from Nature Hills Nursery! Don't miss this opportunity to be the trendsetter in your neighborhood!
