So far so good

So far so good. I think all this rain is helping.

Rain at planting time is about the best luck you can have with a Hardy Hibiscus. Once it settles in and starts putting on size, you are going to love the blooms on Midnight Marvel. Thanks for the update, Jenifer!

The plant arrived looking very nice

The plant arrived looking very nice. Planted it two days later and after two weeks the first bloom yesterday and it has many buds that should start opening in the next few days. Money well spent.

Midnight Marvel moves fast once it gets settled in, so blooms within two weeks of planting is a great sign that yours took right to its new spot. Those deep crimson flowers are worth every bit of the wait. Thanks for sharing the update, William, and enjoy the show as those buds open up over the next few days.

Very pleased with this plant

Plant arrived in great shape. I got container size 2. I dug an appropriate size hole for the plant and loosened the roots before planting. Filled in around the root ball with rich dirt, watered thoroughly. After 3-4 weeks, the plant looks to have taken very well. New growth is coming on fast. I expect this hibiscus will do very well!

Sounds like you gave it a great start, Nathan. Loosening the roots before planting really does make a difference with hardy hibiscus, and rich backfill soil sets them up to push that new growth you are already seeing. These plants tend to come on strong once they settle in, so you should have a lot to look forward to come bloom time. Thanks for sharing how it went.

Absolutely Stunning Hibiscus!! I'm in zone 9a

Absolutely Stunning Hibiscus!! I'm in zone 9a Texas, and Moonshadow Rosita, really performs extremely well, in the Texas heat.

Hearing that Rosita holds up in Texas heat is genuinely good to know, since zone 9a summers are no joke. Hardy hibiscus can sometimes struggle where the nights stay warm, so it's great to have real-world confirmation she's performing well for you. If you want to push even more blooms, a light balanced fertilizer through midsummer tends to keep the flower cycle going strong. Thanks for sharing your experience, Deborah. The Nature Hills Team

Plant okay, survived shipment

The plant is as advertised. It does have a developed root system, and since it is a herbaceous perennial it will recover from shipping shock and be okay. But you guys have a lot to learn about shipping plants. You have to secure the pot and rootball inside the box so it can’t move. Either zip tie the pot and rootball to the box or install a bamboo rod the length of the plant/box so it can’t bounce round. See photo to see results of what happens when you don’t.

Very pleased!!

I was a little worried when I got just a plant with stems but they’re coming in nicely! Both are lush and green with lots of stems, I can’t wait for the blooms to come (already have buds on them!!)

UPDATE!! I have blooms!! Big, beautiful flowers!!

Hibiscus can look deceptively bare when they first arrive, so it is great to hear yours bounced back quickly and are already blooming. Those flowers are something else when they open up. Enjoy every bit of it, Elizabeth!

Great experience with Nature Hills

The plant was ground level in the pot when we bought it. Planted it in full sun a few weeks ago and it's already a foot tall with beautiful bushy leaves. This is growing so fast! We can't wait till it blooms.

Midnight Marvel really does take off once it settles in, and a foot of growth in just a few weeks is a great sign it loves its spot. Those big, deep-green leaves are half the show before the blooms even arrive. The flowers are worth the wait, rich crimson and dinner-plate sized. Thanks for sharing the update!

Stunning Midnight Marvel Hibiscus

Another winner from Nature Hills Nursery - beautiful, full lush and ready to bloom!

Midnight Marvel is such a rewarding plant to watch through the season, with those deep burgundy leaves and the big blooms that follow. It will just keep getting better as it establishes. Thanks for sharing, Margaret, and enjoy the show this summer!

It arrived in a sealed dark box ( this plant NEEDS sunlight ) and on deaths door. Most of the branches were broken and I had to cut them off, of course those were the ones that had the semi blooms. So it’s about 1/5 the size it should be due to most of it breaking off in transit. It’s still alive thankfully but won’t be a bush or bloom flowers til next spring now which means I should’ve just waited to buy from nursery in spring ( all the nurseries here were out of Marvels by mid September which is why I ordered one from
This company )

came really healthy and beautiful

came really healthy and beautiful. I planted it immediately and it’s taken well. Excited to have it show off next year!

Midnight Marvel is worth the wait. It does take a season to settle in, but once it hits its stride those dinner-plate blooms in deep burgundy are hard to beat. Thanks for sharing the update, and enjoy the show next year!

Love Love these Hibiscus

Love Love these Hibiscus BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Hardy hibiscus are hard to beat for summer drama, and Midnight Marvel is one of the best of the bunch with those deep burgundy leaves and oversized blooms. Glad yours are doing well! If you want to encourage even bigger flowers, a low-nitrogen fertilizer in midsummer works nicely. Thanks for sharing, Jennifer.

Excellent

Midnight Marvel is a hard one not to love. The foliage alone turns heads before the blooms even open. Thanks for taking a moment to leave a review, Ken, and enjoy the show this season. -The Nature Hills Team

Would buy again

Plant came quick healthy and vibrant

Midnight Marvel is a great choice, Ken. It puts on quite a show once it gets settled in and starts throwing those deep red blooms. Give it a full sun spot and it will reward you well come midsummer. Thanks for the kind words.

Nature Hills Nursery is the BEST

Nature Hills is now the only mail order nursery I use for trees and shrubs.
Not only do they offer quality products, their packaging is beyond compare. Plants are securely wrapped, no loss is soil in transit. They also offer plants I cannot find anywhere else, even at my local nurseries.

Packaging is something we put real thought into, so it means a lot to hear it holds up all the way to your door. The Midnight Marvel is a great choice, and it tends to reward a little patience in spring since hardy hibiscus can be slow to wake up. Thanks for making us your go-to, Christine. Happy growing!

Plant came healthy and it’s growing

Plant came healthy and it’s growing fast

Midnight Marvel is known for putting on serious size once it settles in, so fast growth is a great sign it arrived in good shape. Give it a little extra water during any hot spells this summer and you should see those big burgundy blooms before long. Thanks for sharing the update, John.

These are truly amazing Hibiscus 🌺

The plants arrived healthy and strong I planted them and so far they are growing and doing great. I was concerned because I ordered so late and was not sure they would survive. They are growing and thriving!!

Late-season planting can feel like a gamble, so it is great to hear these settled in and kept growing. Hardy Hibiscus are surprisingly resilient once their roots get established, and they tend to come back with even more vigor the following year. Thanks for giving them a chance despite the timing.

This is my Second!

I already have one that just started blooming. Hopefully the new one will progress as healthy as the other one. Beautiful plant!

Having one already in bloom is a good sign for the new one. Midnight Marvel tends to establish quickly once it settles in, so with a healthy sibling already going strong in your garden, you know just what this one needs. Thanks for coming back for a second, Jean.

A healthy plant - great size

A healthy plant of an excellent size!

Midnight Marvel is a real showstopper when it gets going, and starting with a healthy, well-sized plant makes all the difference. Thanks for sharing that, Susan. We hope it puts on a great display for you this season.

Positive Experience

This was our first go at ordering a plant and having it shipped. The Hibiscus arrived well-packaged and appeared to be healthy. We planted it immediately and it has really thrived! We were pleasantly surprised with the whole process and the results and would highly recommend!

Midnight Marvel is a great first ship-to-home plant. It handles transit reasonably well, and it sounds like yours hit the ground running once you got it in the soil. Thanks for giving it a shot and for sharing how it turned out. That full, dark foliage with the crimson blooms is something to look forward to each summer.

Very healthy—looking forward to blooms

Very healthy—looking forward to future blooms!

Midnight Marvel is worth the wait. Once it settles in and the weather warms, those deep burgundy blooms can get impressively large, so you have something good to look forward to. Thanks for sharing your update, and feel free to check back in when it flowers!

I received a very healthy plant that was well packaged

I received a very healthy plant that was well packaged. It’s almost doubled in size every week since it arrived. Can’t wait to see this thing in full bloom!

Midnight Marvel is a fast grower once it settles in, so that doubling-up growth is a great sign it's happy in its new spot. The blooms are worth the wait, those deep crimson flowers against the dark foliage are quite a sight. Thanks for letting us know it arrived in good shape, Heath.

I’m surprised by how fast it’s growing

I’m surprised by how fast it’s growing.

Hardy hibiscus can really take off once they settle in, so it is exciting to see yours hitting its stride so quickly. Midnight Marvel tends to put on a lot of growth once the roots establish, and the deep burgundy foliage only gets more dramatic as the season goes on. Enjoy the show!

As you are aware the hibiscus doesn't even start growing in my region until June so why are you

As you are aware the hibiscus doesn't even start growing in my region until June so why are you asking me how it is growing. That is like asking a nun how her mustache is coming in.

Fair point, Stephen, and that analogy genuinely made us laugh. Hardy hibiscus are notoriously slow to wake up in spring, and asking for a review before the plant has even broken dormancy is poor timing on our part. We hope it puts on a great show for you once it does get going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus grow well in containers or pots?

  • MoonShadow™ Rosita can grow in large containers but performs best in ground plantings where it reaches its full 4-foot size. Container growing may limit its impressive scale and require consistent watering. For best results, plant directly in garden beds in zones 5-9.

What type of sunlight does MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus need?

  • MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus thrives in full sun to partial shade. The foliage color varies from dark mocha brown to deep green depending on sunlight exposure. Plant in a location with at least 6 hours of direct sun for best blooming. Shop at Nature Hills for this zone 5-9 hardy variety.

What soil conditions and pH level are best for MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus?

  • MoonShadow™ Rosita thrives in a wide range of soil types once established, from average garden soil to rock garden conditions. This hardy hibiscus adapts to various moisture levels and pH ranges in zones 5-9. Plant in well-draining soil and water regularly the first season to establish strong roots.

How often should I water MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus, especially in hot weather?

  • Water MoonShadow™ Rosita deeply once or twice weekly, providing about 1 inch total. Once established, this hardy hibiscus tolerates varying moisture levels well. In hot weather, increase frequency but avoid daily shallow watering which encourages weak roots.

Is mulching necessary for MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus, and why?

  • Mulching isn't strictly necessary for MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus since it tolerates various soil conditions in zones 5-9. However, a 2-3 inch layer helps retain moisture and protect the crown during winter dormancy. Apply mulch in late fall and refresh in spring when new growth emerges. Shop quality mulching supplies at Nature Hills.

How does MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus perform in winter—does it die back?

  • Yes, MoonShadow™ Rosita dies back to the ground each fall like all hardy hibiscus. This woody perennial will emerge again in spring in zones 5-9, though it can be slow to break dormancy. Cut stems to 4-6 inches in late fall and mulch the crown for winter protection.

When does MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus start blooming and how long does it last?

  • MoonShadow™ Rosita blooms continuously from summer through autumn, with the MoonShadow™ series known for starting earlier and blooming longer than traditional hardy hibiscus. While hardy hibiscus can be slow to emerge in spring, this improved variety gets growing sooner for extended flower production. Expect reliable blooming in zones 5-9 once plants are established.

Is MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus resistant to pests like Japanese beetles?

  • Yes, MoonShadow™ Rosita shows significant resistance to Japanese beetles, a major advantage over traditional hardy hibiscus varieties. This improved variety also resists other insect damage while attracting beneficial pollinators like bees and butterflies. Plant in full sun for best pest resistance and flowering performance.

What is the proper spacing for planting MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus?

  • Space MoonShadow™ Rosita Hardy Hibiscus 4-5 feet apart to accommodate their mature size of 4 feet tall and wide. This allows proper air circulation and room for the full mounded growth habit. Plant closer for quicker screening effect or wider for specimen use.
