Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is vital for this hibiscus, requiring at least six to eight hours of direct light daily. While it can tolerate some afternoon shade, you will notice fewer of those deep pink blooms and a leggy growth habit if it stays in the dark for too long.
  • Soil: These plants love "wet feet" and thrive in rich, moist soil that mimics a marshy environment. If you have heavy clay that holds water, this plant is a perfect choice; however, for sandy soil, you should mix in plenty of compost or peat moss to help retain moisture.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist to help the root system expand. Once established, this hibiscus remains a thirsty plant that prefers damp ground; if the soil dries out completely, the plant may drop its flower buds or show yellowing leaves. While it can handle occasional dry spells better than tropical varieties, consistent watering ensures the largest, most vibrant flowers all summer.

Pruning Tips

Since this perennial dies back to the ground each winter, wait until late spring to cut the old, woody stems down to about six inches above the soil. This hibiscus blooms on new wood, so early pruning allows the plant to focus all its energy on the fresh stalks emerging from the roots. Think of this like a seasonal reset that keeps the plant compact and prevents it from becoming too woody or sparse at the base.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as soon as you see new green shoots poking through the ground. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, leafy growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. A well timed feeding ensures the plant has the phosphorus it needs to produce those dinner plate sized Rosita blooms.

Starting with the enormous vivid bi-color petals that are a swirling mix of Rosita-red centers that spiral out along the veins among the broad pale baby pink petals! The centers are a pale buttery yellow stamen that you'd expect from the Hibiscus flower family! Then add profuse flowering, reduced viable seeds, and insect damage resistance!

Rosita Hardy Hibiscus is backed by a four-foot-tall and wide mound of dark mocha brown to dark violet foliage that can also be deep dark green depending on sunlight, temperature, and nutrition availability. The color play is incredible! The blooms arrive in huge clusters all summer and into autumn, attracting droves of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!

Hardy Hibiscus are woody perennial plants that die back to the ground each fall and can be a bit slow to get growing in the spring, but MoonShadow™ series plants get growing sooner and bloom longer, so you get high-impact flowers and foliage in a hurry! Once established, they tolerate a wide range of soil types, moisture availability, and climates, thriving in USDA growing zones 5 through 9! Plus, this new and improved variety has shown significant resistance to Japanese Beetles!
