Description
Lollipop® Crabapple (Malus 'Lollizam') is a slow-growing dwarf flowering crabapple from Proven Winners® ColorChoice® with a dense, naturally rounded, globe-shaped crown. It grows about 8 to 10 feet tall and wide and thrives in zones 4 through 8.
What sets Lollipop apart is its tight, symmetrical head of small, fine-textured green leaves, which looks neatly trimmed with little or no pruning. The leaves run only about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long, which is what gives the crown its fine texture. Pink buds open to a heavy show of fragrant, single white flowers in spring, and bright red fruit about 3/8 inch across follows later in the season.
Its size and formal outline suit patios, courtyards, entry gardens and other small spaces where a full-size crabapple would crowd the house. Use one as a focal point, set a matched pair beside a walk or gate, or grow it in a large container on a deck or terrace. Allow about 10 feet of space for each tree in the ground. Bees and other pollinators work the spring flowers, and birds come for the fruit.
- Light: full sun, at least six hours of direct light a day
- Water: average; keep the soil evenly moist while roots establish, then water during long dry spells
- Soil: well-drained, slightly acidic soil with average moisture
- Care: prune only if needed, in late winter, since spring cuts let fire blight in. For more, see our crabapple care and selection guide
