This dazzling, showy flowering cherry is one of the best of the best. Also called a Japanese Flowering Cherry, and officially going by Kanzan Flowering Cherry these days, the Kwanzan Flowering Cherry (Prunus serrulata 'Kwanzan') is absolutely stunning in early spring. How to Use Kwanzan Flowering Cherry in the Landscape
With twice as many blooms as other flowering cherry trees, this makes a perfect choice to use as a wonderfully dramatic focal point. Planted around a deck or patio, the Kwanzan Cherry Tree will create an enchanting outdoor living space.
Line them along your driveway or along a pathway. Or, use it as a wonderful street tree because of the minimal amount of maintenance needed to keep it looking great.
No matter if your yard is small or large, this is a spectacular specimen tree. The Kwanzan Cherry Tree is a vibrant tree that would be an amazing addition to any yard. It makes a perfectly stunning focal point.
In the front yard, consider planting 3, 5, or 7 in a gently curving, mulched raised berm that rises from the flat lawn. Underplant with a few different kinds of Hosta to complement the look, without competing for center stage.
Or, use them in the backyard. You'll want to create a special space for your Kwanzan trees in a new mulched garden bed. Be sure to give yourself enough room to have an annual spring picnic on the lawn near your new bed. #ProPlantTips for Care
One of the hardiest and easiest to grow flowering trees, the Kwanzan grows beautifully. Plant it in full sun or give it a little afternoon shade.
Plant your Kwanzan in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sun a day. They'll thrive in organically rich, well-draining soil. Kwanzan prefers good drainage, so be aware of your drainage before planting in a lawn situation.
If poor drainage is suspected, plant on a mound or raised bed that is 12 to 18 inches above the soil line. In hotter climates, mulch to 3 to 4 inches deep to 3 feet outside of the canopy of the tree.
Plan to mulch underneath, as the roots won't like competition from grass. For this tree, we highly recommend adding our Nature Hills Root Booster to the top few inches of your planting hole. This product will help the roots establish quickly in your soil.
Give it regular water, especially when it's a young tree. Just use the "Finger Test" to check the status of the soil under the surface. Poke your index finger into the soil near the roots. If it feels moist, you can skip watering. If it's getting dry, be sure to give your tree a nice, slow, deep drink of water.
You can prune this tree to control the size and keep it at any height you prefer. Wait until after the flowers have passed to prune for size.
If you are going to use multiple trees in your landscape, plant them 12 to 15 feet apart, measuring from the center trunk of one to the center trunk of the next.

At first when we received it we weren't sure if our tree will survive. We only saw a tall branch with a few scatter leaves. We planted and now is full of leaves and little branches growing through.
I'm so excited to see it grow everyday.
Kwanzan cherries can look pretty bare when they arrive, so it makes sense you had some doubts early on. Watching those new branches fill in is a good sign the roots are settling in well. Of the 4 kwanzan tree I bought, one came with no leaves and even after about 2 months in the ground shows no signs of life. I’ve even bought the 1 year glow and grow guarantee by paying additional cost. However, even after 2-3 emails, not a single response. Very disappointed with customer service (even with purchase of extra warranty). No way to call them and they don’t respond to emails to their support team.
I received the Kwanzan Flowering Cherry Tree and planted and it never thrived and buds are brown. Tried calling and never got through to talks to somebody. Emailed and never got an answer back except that it was received and acknowledge and will answer back. First timed ordering here. I ordered from Fast Growing Trees and Starks and never had a problem. All the trees I ordered from them are alive and thriving in my backyard.
Dead tree and no response to emails or calls. Don’t bother

Fantastic looking flowers, but my 2 are at least 40 feet tall and similar spread. I just love them, and would plant another 1 or 2 if I had the room in my yard. I planted them in honor of my late parents; my Mother mention they were her favorite cherry tree around Washington. The tags on the tree also said they would only grow about half their size. I got a pleasant surprise with mine.
