Where to Plant

Sunlight: This variety performs best in partial to full shade. Provide about 2 to 4 hours of morning sun to sharpen the contrast of the cream margins, but shield it from harsh afternoon light to prevent leaf scorch.
Soil: Aim for "chocolate cake" soil that is rich in organic matter and stays moist. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in some compost or aged bark to improve drainage and keep the roots from sitting in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, give your Hosta about one inch of water per week to help the roots establish deep in the ground. While mature plants can handle occasional dry spells, inconsistent moisture often leads to brown, crispy leaf edges and smaller foliage. For the best look, keep the soil consistently damp like a wrung-out sponge.

Pruning Tips

Hostas are herbaceous perennials, meaning they do not have woody stems and will die back to the ground each winter. Once the flowers fade in summer, cut the stalks off at the base to keep the plant from wasting energy on seed production. After a hard frost turns the leaves yellow or brown in late autumn, trim all foliage to the ground to remove hiding spots for slugs and snails.

Cream edges all the way, a variety so great you can't help but exclaim "Wheee!" It's probably why this adorable perennial was given the name Wheee! Hosta (Hosta 'Wheee!'). Wheee! has amazing foliage that shows off its appealing colors. The light green leaves have cream-colored margins, and they extend from the tip all the way down the petiole to the crown.

The leaves themselves are an interesting sight to see as their edges ripple and ruffle slightly. Giving it added texture. This lovable leafy plant has more than just foliage to give though, in midsummer light lavender flowers appear on purple spikes. They'll shoot up from the foliage, giving the appearance that this Hosta has sprouted antenna!

Those antennae attract loads of hummingbirds and Pollinators to your garden! But, having excellent substance, the leaves are resistant to slugs. Plant Wheee! Hostas as low-growing, low-care Perennial specimens in an area that receives the right amount of light. The leaves need some morning sun to bring out the best coloration; too much sun will burn the leaves. Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. It is best to keep areas around Hostas clear of excess leaf debris to reduce the presence of slugs and snails. They do best with a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch chips to help hold in moisture. Deadhead as blooms fade, and prune back the foliage once it dies back in the fall. They appreciate being divided every 3-5 years.
