Looks great

Looks great. Recieved in great condition. A few leaves turned brown, but recovered quickly. Very pleased.

Honeycrisp can drop or brown a few leaves after the stress of shipping, so it's good to hear yours bounced back quickly. They're resilient trees once they settle in. Thanks for sharing how it arrived, Sharon, and enjoy the harvest when it comes!

Honeycrisp Apple Tree

Our tree is happy and healthy!

A happy, healthy Honeycrisp is a great sign, especially in its first season getting established. Keep the water consistent through dry stretches and give it a little patience. Those first real harvests make it all worth it. Thanks for sharing the update!

Trees came healthy

Trees came healthy.

Healthy trees at arrival is exactly the right start for Honeycrisp, since a strong root system in the first season sets up years of good fruiting. Thanks for letting us know, Mary. If you have questions as they settle in and start growing, we are here to help.

Nicely packaged and undamaged 3 foot tree

Nicely packaged and undamaged 3 foot tree.

Hearing that the tree arrived in good shape is exactly what we aim for. Honeycrisp can be a little particular about getting a strong start, so an undamaged root system right out of the box really does set it up well. Thanks for taking a moment to share that.

Shipping condition

Leaves were wilted in appearance and discolored (darker green along midrib very light green on leaf edges) looks like maybe lack of fertilizer. No leaf drop however. Root system decent but at the growth stage where upside repotting would have occured. Overall in decent condition. Hopeing for some decent fall weather to help establish a strong establishment before winter.

Extrordinary Apple

We planted two apple trees in Feb. 2002 and this year we got our first apples. Twenty-seven to be exact. I babied the honeycrisp tree and sprayed it picked bugs off and wrapped its trunk in the winter. It gave us enough apples this first year to make two fresh apple cakes, some applesauce and left some for eating. They are wonderfully tasty and crisp.

Hello Sandy,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Honeycrisp apple trees! We’re absolutely delighted to hear that your dedicated care has rewarded you with a joyous harvest of 27 apples—what a fantastic milestone after 21 years! Your attention to detail, from pest management to protecting the trunk in winter, clearly made a big difference.

Two fresh apple cakes and homemade applesauce sound like the perfect way to enjoy the season’s bounty. As your trees continue to mature, you might find even more abundant harvests—and if you ever want tips on pruning or fertilizing for even better fruiting, we’d be happy to help you keep your orchard thriving.

Mi
Honeycrisp

This passed week was the first taste of a honeycrisp. I really like the flavor, sweetness, crispness, boldness, sharp. This apple remindered me of eating the Senchu apple. very good apple. I live in zone 4. i want to grow apples. Honeycrisp, gala, senchu.

Dear Mi S.,

Thank you so much for sharing your delightful first experience tasting a Honeycrisp apple! We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed its flavor, sweetness, crispness, and boldness—those qualities truly make Honeycrisp a favorite for many. It’s wonderful that it reminded you of the Senchu apple as well. Living in zone 4 gives you some lovely options for growing apples, and your idea to plant Honeycrisp, Gala, and Senchu sounds like a fantastic mix that can lend your orchard both variety and resilience.

To help you succeed, be sure to plant your apple trees in well-drained soil with full sun exposure, and consider spacing each tree to allow good air circulation—both reduce disease risk and encourage strong growth. Especially in zone 4, protecting young trees during the winter with mulch or protective wraps can be beneficial. For pollination, since some apple varieties require cross-pollination, having multiple compatible varieties like Honeycrisp and Gala flowering around the same time will boost your fruit set.

Fast growth

Received my Honeycrisp apple tree last spring. It took off and grew fast. Maybe 1 more year to get some fruit? Sure hope so.

Hi Mel,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Honeycrisp apple tree! We’re delighted to hear it took off and grew quickly since last spring—that’s fantastic progress. Honeycrisp trees are known for their vibrant flavor and can be seasonally rewarding, so your anticipation for fruit is completely understandable.

Typically, Honeycrisp apple trees start producing fruit between 2 to 4 years after planting, depending on growing conditions. To help encourage your tree’s productivity in the next growing season, we recommend ensuring it receives plenty of sunlight, staying consistent with watering especially in dry periods, and considering a balanced fertilizer formulated for fruit trees in early spring. It also helps to prune strategically during dormancy to focus the tree’s energy on fruit development.

If you would like detailed care guides or have any specific questions as your tree grows, we’re here anytime to help!

FRUIT

Got fruit my second year. They are awesome! Always loved buying honeycrisp apples at the grocery store. I'm here to tell you it's nothing compared to the taste picked right off my tree. I feel as though buying live stuff online is a bit of a crap shoot but i've always been impressed with what I received from Nature Hills. I noticed you guys seem to carry a lot of sifferent blueberry bushes. That's what I'm here for this time but just thought I would take time to let you know I am very satisfied. I trust nature hills. Thanks!

Hi Apple,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience! We’re thrilled to hear your Honeycrisp apple tree rewarded you with fruit so early and that the flavor fresh-picked off your tree exceeded even your grocery store favorites. Hearing that your trust and satisfaction with us grows alongside your garden truly means the world.

We’re glad you noticed our wide selection of blueberry bushes! They’re a favorite for many of our customers, and we’d be happy to help you pick the perfect ones for your space and needs. When you’re ready, feel free to reach out for personalized recommendations based on your growing zone and taste preferences.

For the best yields with blueberries, don’t forget they thrive in acidic soil (pH between 4.5 and 5.5), so adding peat moss or acidic fertilizer might give them a great start. Also, mulching helps retain moisture which blueberries love!

Thanks again for trusting Nature Hills—it’s always a joy to support passionate gardeners like you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are honeycrisp apples self pollinating?

  • Honeycrisp apple trees are not self-pollinating and require a compatible pollinator variety for fruit production. While they may produce some fruit alone, cross-pollination dramatically increases your harvest size and quality. Plant another apple variety that blooms at the same time within 50 feet for best results.

Are honeycrisp apple trees disease resistant?

  • Honeycrisp apple trees have moderate disease resistance but aren't immune to common apple diseases like fire blight or apple scab. Their hardy nature in zones 4-9 helps them withstand environmental stress. Choose disease-resistant rootstock when shopping at Nature Hills for best results.

Do you need to plant 2 apple trees?

  • Apple trees need cross-pollination from a different variety to produce the best fruit yields. While some apples can self-pollinate, planting two compatible varieties ensures a much larger harvest. Plant your Honeycrisp with a suggested pollinator partner for optimal results.

What USDA hardiness zones can Honeycrisp Apple Trees grow in?

  • Honeycrisp Apple Trees thrive in USDA hardiness zones 4-9. This variety was specifically bred for cold tolerance and has proven adaptable to warmer climates as well. Plant yours in spring after the last frost for best establishment.

How tall and wide will a mature Honeycrisp Apple Tree get?

  • Mature Honeycrisp Apple Trees typically reach 12-15 feet tall and 12-15 feet wide when grown on standard rootstock. Dwarf varieties stay smaller at 8-10 feet tall and wide. Plan for adequate spacing when planting, and shop at Nature Hills for quality trees suited to zones 4-9.

What type of soil does a Honeycrisp Apple Tree prefer?

  • Honeycrisp Apple Trees thrive in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0. They adapt well to various soil types but perform best in loamy soil rich in organic matter. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially important in zones 4-9 where this variety flourishes.

Do these trees need regular pruning and fertilizing?

  • Yes, Honeycrisp apple trees benefit from annual pruning and regular fertilizing for optimal fruit production. Prune during dormancy in late winter to maintain shape and air circulation. Fertilize in early spring with balanced fertilizer, then again after harvest to support next year's growth.
