Bring the beach home with a flowing stand of ornamental grasses. You'll be mesmerized by the play of summer breezes through the arching blades and wind-tossed silver plumes.
Ornamental grasses are graceful additions to the landscape and Variegated Japanese Silver Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegata') is the cream of the crop!
This slim selection offers even more dynamic features, becoming a gorgeous accent quickly each year. Japanese Silver features brilliant green and white stripes with white being the predominant color, for a bi-color effect. It just sparkles while swaying in the breeze and sun!
The foliage of this clump-forming grass is a gracefully arching landscape element. The variegated form this grass takes accents the incredible summer plumes that follow. In fall, the foliage often brings out yellow hues to the blades that remain upright all winter.
The striped foliage clump is very eye-catching. But it's the long flower stalks that appear in midsummer that really stand out. The feathery silvery-cream blooms rise above the foliage like tassels. Turning beige all winter, they give your garden winter interest.
These flower plumes provide your floral bouquets and garden a whimsical textural contrast. Effective gardens appeal to all your senses. Listen to Variegated Japanese Silver Grass murmur as you watch their long foliage loft and sway in a kinetic dance.
How to Use Variegated Japanese Silver Grass In The Landscape
Clumping, impressive specimen plants with 4-season interest, Variegated Japanese Silver Grass lends soft vertical accents and graceful motion. Sized perfectly for privacy and screening hedges, Japanese Silver creates "Living Walls" for Outdoor Garden Rooms and tranquil privacy.
Great for naturalizing and prairie restoration, mass plantings of Japanese Silver provides erosion control and banks of tranquility, transforming hard-to-mow slopes into something magical. Plus lovely borders to enhance (or hide) the view!
The waving fronds add immense color, texture, sound and motion! The calming Zen provided by softly rustling grasses, plus the mesmerizing swaying are lovely additions to your private spaces.
Fine-textured blades create wonderful accents and backdrops when interspersed among mixed-shrub beds. Beautiful for anchoring perennial borders and soften corners.
Tall Grasses like this are exceptionally effective to mark a turning point in your garden path. Try pulling it outside the boundary of your planting bed to allow their "peek-a-boo" foliage to offer guests a tantalizing glimpse of what's ahead.
Create garden vignettes by planting a curved row of grasses around a focal point, garden seating or sculpture to make them stand out!
#ProPlantTips For Care
Strongest in full sun, Variegated Japanese Silver Grass tolerates part shade but won't be as strong and upright, becoming more arching and weeping.
Full sunlight also dramatically makes these just glow! Imagine seeing the rising or setting sun backlight these fronds from behind is breathtaking!
Adaptable to salt, drought and wet winter soil, these are cold hardy, deer and rabbits resistant plus, highly pest and disease-free!
Miscanthus requires well-drained soil but becomes highly drought tolerant once established. Easy-to-grow, Silver Grass is cold hardy in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 10.
Warm-season grasses won't grow until the soil temperature warms so have patience. Prune before growth starts to appear in early spring and remove built-up leaves and debris from the center.
Go ahead and impress your friends! This grass doesn't spread by rhizomes, but please allow room for it to reach its mature spread. The with no seeds maturing, the issue with reseeding isn't a problem with Variegated Japanese Silver Grass!
