Sophisticated Vertical Accent - Fine Line® Buckthorn

Does your landscape need a punch of interest? Try Fine Line® Buckthorn PP#14,791 (Rhamnus frangula 'Ron Williams'), it is a vastly improved cultivar of Fernleaf Buckthorn from the Proven Winners® collection.

Like a living exclamation point, Fine Line® becomes a magnificent architectural accent. With a strongly upright habit, it easily draws the eye. Use it to spotlight special features of your home or outdoor entertainment area.

You'll appreciate the versatility of this tall, narrow, feathery deciduous plant.

Create privacy in areas where space is at a premium. Fine Line® is a fantastic backdrop for any shrub border. The airy texture and formal habit make it excellent as a 'Thriller' in exterior containers.

The narrow form is beautifully juxtaposed with soft, lacy, green foliage. Overall, it gives the impression of soft strength.

It's beautiful all season long. The color turns golden-yellow in the fall, but only in years when the cooler weather comes on slowly.

Fine Line® provides a high-end, designer look, but it is so hardy and easy to grow. This drought-tolerant plant even does well in either sun or part sun conditions. It has few insect or disease problems. And deer tend to leave it alone. Please note, that the Buckthorn genus can be invasive in certain areas. The improved Fine Line® cultivar does produce some inconspicuous flowers in early spring. But, it produces very few fruit, and of those, only 2% of the seeds are viable.

However, we may not be able to ship into your state if it performs 'too well'. Birds do love to eat the small, dark fruit and it can spread in certain areas. Nature Hills uses Plant Sentry™, an online platform that blocks shipments of all invasive plants in vulnerable areas. We comply with every United States federal and state regulation for proper shipping of plant material.

Thank you for shopping with us and supporting the needs of your local ecosystem!

Fine Line® is an improved Buckthorn that features a wonderful texture and a handsome columnar shape. It's tough, adaptable, and gorgeous, easily adding height to landscaping without taking up a lot of horizontal space.

It's easy to understand why so many gardeners adore the Proven Winners® Fine Line®! Order yours from the environmentally sound growers at Nature Hills today.

How to Use Fine Line® Buckthorn in the Landscape

Use a single Fine Line® Buckthorn as a stunning specimen. It would suit any garden style, from Asian to Cottage to Contemporary.

Add another one and flank either side of your front door for an impressive display. Grow them in the ground, or plant them in luxe outdoor containers.

The foliage is wispy but dense. Use several to create a strategic privacy screen by spacing them 2 feet apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

You'll love the look and the durable nature of a Fine Line® hedge. Very little pruning is required to keep these columnar trees in check and full!

Create living walls of a special outdoor garden room, or shield your pool deck from prying eyes. Extend the height of your existing fence, or hide the neighbor's trash cans. You'll find plenty of ways to use this plant!

The soft, fine texture makes it an interesting backdrop for any shrub border. It's a perfect choice to add a welcome contrast to your landscape.

  • Tall Sender Deciduous Shrubs
  • Extremely Fine-Textured Foliage
  • Lovely Golden Fall Foliage
  • Excellent Hedge Shrub
  • Amazing 'Thriller' in Container Arrangements

#ProPlantTips for Care

Plant your Fine Line® Buckthorn in partial sun or full sun for best results. They require well-drained soil, so plant in a raised bed or container if you have heavy soil that holds water.

Give a moderate amount of water on a regular basis during the first season. Once their root system is established in your landscape, they become drought tolerant.

Very little pruning is needed, but you can snip any errant branch any time of year. All plants do well with good air circulation.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Well Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune Any Time During Growing Season
  • Very Easy To Grow
  • Drought & Urban Tolerant
  • Deer Tend to Leave Them Alone

This special plant gets rave reviews but must be selected with a little care. Let our system determine if this beautiful plant will work for you. Enjoy the Fine Line® Buckthorn Tree!

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Fine Line® Buckthorn non‑invasive compared with older buckthorn varieties?

  • Traditional Japanese and glossy buckthorns produce thousands of viable seeds that birds spread into natural areas. Fine Line® was bred from a naturally sparse‑fruiting branch sport and then trial‑tested for seed viability—fewer than 2 % of its berries contain fertile seed. Because the shrub devotes energy to foliage, not reproduction, gardeners keep the trademark fern‑like texture and columnar outline without worrying about unwanted seedlings or state restrictions. In short, breeders solved the ecological problem first, then released the plant for landscape use.

How tall and wide does Fine Line® Buckthorn grow, and where does its narrow habit excel in the landscape?

  • At maturity the shrub reaches 5 – 7 ft tall and 2 – 3 ft wide, forming a tight, upright column. This pencil‑slim profile slips into spots where traditional hedging shrubs won’t fit—between windows, beside front walks, flanking entryways, or as a living exclamation point in mixed borders. Because the plant holds its vertical lines without constant shearing, it delivers architectural structure in beds, containers, or massed as a low‑maintenance hedge along property lines or patios.

Which climates and light conditions suit Fine Line®, and how should I plant it for best performance?

  • Hardiness: Zones 2 – 7 tolerate ‑25 °F winters and hot Mid‑Atlantic summers. Light: Full sun produces the densest foliage, but the shrub handles part shade (minimum 4 hrs direct sun). Soil: Any well‑drained loam, sand, or gravel works; avoid sites that stay saturated for days. Planting steps: 1) Loosen soil 10 in. deep and blend in 2 in. compost for drainage and nutrients. 2) Dig a hole twice the pot width; set the crown 1 in. above grade to prevent rot. 3) Back‑fill firmly and water to settle. 4) Add a 2‑in. mulch ring, keeping mulch 2 in. from stems. 5) Water when the top 2 in. of soil dries during the first season; thereafter, irrigate only in prolonged drought. Following this sequence—right light, drainage, proper depth, mulch, moisture—eliminates stressors that stunt early growth.

Does Fine Line® Buckthorn need regular pruning, and what simple maintenance keeps it looking tidy?

  • The cultivar’s naturally tight habit means annual pruning is optional. If shaping is desired, wait until late winter when the shrub is leafless: remove any dead or crossing branches, then shorten overly long shoots by one‑third, cutting just above an outward bud. This thinning preserves the column while stimulating fresh, dense foliage. Fertilize lightly—one application of balanced slow‑release food each spring is plenty—and refresh the mulch ring annually. With this “inspect, thin, feed, mulch” routine, Fine Line® retains its sculptural form with under 15 minutes of work per year.

Is Fine Line® Buckthorn deer‑resistant and drought‑tolerant, and how do I safeguard it in extreme conditions?

  • Deer and rabbits rarely browse the bitter, alkaloid‑rich foliage, so protection is seldom needed. Drought: Once established, the shrub’s fibrous root system taps deep moisture, surviving ordinary dry spells; during extended heatwaves, a single deep soak every two weeks prevents tip scorch. Cold snaps: In Zone 2–3 winters, apply a fresh 3‑in. mulch blanket after the ground freezes to buffer root temperatures and prevent frost heave. By combining inherent pest resistance with minimal but strategic watering and winter mulch, Fine Line® lives up to its reputation as a carefree, “plant‑and‑forget” vertical accent.

Is Fine Line® Buckthorn available for shipping to every state, or are there restrictions I should know about?

  • Fine Line® Buckthorn cannot be shipped to Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, or Vermont. These states maintain broad restrictions on Rhamnus frangula species—regardless of a cultivar’s low‑fertility breeding—so orders containing this plant are automatically blocked at checkout for those ZIP codes. If you live outside the listed states, standard shipping and warranty terms apply.

Fine Line Buckthorn

I own 11 of these in my landscaping, they are amazing and grow really fast. They are not invasive and they are great for privacy. I have a row of six of them, in two years and they are almost the same height as my six-foot fence. The other five are older and stand around 8 feet in height, I would suggest these for any landscape to help balance out the back round. I purchased half of them from nature hills and I was concerned when I received a box of branches as I described them, I planted them right away and they took off so don't get discouraged.
