Proven Winners® Color Choice® Double Take™ Scarlet Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa 'Scarlet Storm' PP20951) is an improved variety that works beautifully many places around your landscape. This variety features amazing, double dark red flowers that absolutely cover the stems from top to bottom.
People go a little "ga-ga" when they see them. First of all, this is one of the earliest plants to bloom in spring. And the color is intensely pretty.
The blooms themselves look a little like some other beloved flowers. The tight pom-pom buds resemble Peonies. When they open, people say they look like Camellia or even Roses.
You'll really notice these blooms. At least 2 inches long, they flower on last year's wood before the leaves emerge.
If you miss them your "Double Take" blooming the first day, don't worry. You have about 30 more days to get your fill. Yes, they continue to bloom for a month - or more - right up until the foliage develops.
This early flowering deciduous shrub is broad at the base and branched all the way to the ground. It never looks "leggy" and will make a spectacular flowering hedge. Watch as cars slow down to stare!
Be sure to cut the longest stems to bring in your house to welcome spring. They make an elegant cut flower arrangement.
And you'll love that they bred the wicked thorns off of the old-fashioned flowering Quince. These thornless, sterile plants will not produce fruit, either. No fruit, no mess.
Double Take Scarlet Quince is the perfect size for most landscapes. It flowers extensively, has no thorns and no fruit, and is not fussy about soil types. It thrives in clay soil and is even drought-tolerant once established in your landscape. What are you waiting for? Order today!
How to Use Double Take Scarlet Quince in the Landscape
This plant is excellent for hedging, mass planting and cut flower gardens. Double Take makes a very noteworthy early-season specimen for the mixed border.
We just know you'll love this mounded shrub for its spectacular early spring display of large flowers with intense scarlet color. It's a perfect size to be used in all parts of the landscape.
Double Take Scarlet Quince fits into foundation plantings underneath your windows beautifully. Try one on either side of your front door to flank the entrance with a lot of pizzazz. You can use a single plant as a specimen anywhere.
We love seeing these as low hedges at the inside of the front sidewalk. You'll delineate your yard in a friendly way, with a surplus of style points. Neighbors will appreciate that rich pop of spring color to shake off their winter blues.
Let’s not forget to use these as a beautifully colorful hedge next to your patio or running along the length of a fence. It will give you a feeling of security, without making you feel like you live in a fortress or obstructing your view completely.
No need to prune or trim these, as they'll grow into a lovely form all by themselves. This is a maintenance-free, excellent low hedge. Plant them 2 to 3 feet "on center" for a solid hedge. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
You can also use Double Take Scarlet Quince in the mixed border. Imagine them as a backdrop to spring-flowering Daffodils for quite a show. You can use them in your perennial border to create some structure along the back of your gardens or consider repeating the plant regularly throughout the border.
You simply can't go wrong with this wonderfully carefree, free-flowering variety.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Double Take Scarlet Quince is easy to care for and they do not produce thorns or fruit. It is heat and drought-tolerant and makes a beautiful landscape plant. It will thrive in full sun to part shade.
This plant is very adaptable to all kinds of soils - including clay soil. The only thing it won't tolerate well is standing water, or poorly drained soils.
Proper siting of your plants will ensure your plants perform best. If you need to increase drainage you may consider building up the area a bit with some native soils and planting on top of that. Mulching your plants is always beneficial.
Plan to give a regular, even amount of moisture as the plants are young. Once their roots become established in your soil, Double Take Scarlet Quince becomes drought tolerant and very self-sufficient.
This low-maintenance plant may be pruned to shape after flowering. Double Take blooms on old wood so do not prune until after the spring flowers are done blooming.
While deer may sample any plant if hungry enough, they tend to leave this one alone. Spray all new plants with Deer Repellent if you live in deer country.
You'll want to plant this stunning and vibrant shrub somewhere it can be admired by all. Order a Double Take Scarlet Quince today!
