Where to Plant

Sunlight: Give this perennial at least 6 hours of full sun daily for the best flower production and the tightest foliage mound. While it handles light afternoon shade in very hot climates, too much shade results in fewer blooms and a "leggy" appearance.
Soil: These plants demand excellent drainage and prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. If you have heavy clay, plant them in a raised bed or "mound" them up with a mix of compost and grit to keep their roots from sitting in water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to help the roots establish deep in the soil. Once mature, Paint the Town Red Dianthus is quite drought tolerant, though you should provide a deep soak during extended dry spells to prevent the foliage from browning. Inconsistent watering or soggy soil often leads to crown rot, so it is better to stay on the slightly dry side than to overwater.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood and benefits from a "haircut" immediately after the first heavy flush of flowers fades.
