Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this perennial at least 6 hours of full sun daily for the best flower production and the tightest foliage mound. While it handles light afternoon shade in very hot climates, too much shade results in fewer blooms and a "leggy" appearance.
  • Soil: These plants demand excellent drainage and prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. If you have heavy clay, plant them in a raised bed or "mound" them up with a mix of compost and grit to keep their roots from sitting in water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to help the roots establish deep in the soil. Once mature, Paint the Town Red Dianthus is quite drought tolerant, though you should provide a deep soak during extended dry spells to prevent the foliage from browning. Inconsistent watering or soggy soil often leads to crown rot, so it is better to stay on the slightly dry side than to overwater.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood and benefits from a "haircut" immediately after the first heavy flush of flowers fades. Use garden shears to shear off the spent blossoms and the top inch of foliage to encourage a second wave of blooms later in the summer. This prevents the plant from wasting energy on seed production and keeps the silver blue foliage looking tidy and compact.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as new growth appears to fuel the intense magenta flower show. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this produces soft growth that is easily damaged by the first winter frost. A light layer of compost around the base of the plant each spring is often all the extra nutrition it needs.
