Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the brightest white blooms and best foliage color, plant your Ice Dragon Spirea in full sun, which means at least 6 hours of direct light daily. It can handle partial shade, but you will likely see fewer flowers and a less dense growth habit.
  • Soil: This shrub prefers well drained soil that is rich in organic matter, though it is quite adaptable to various types. If you have heavy clay, mix in some compost to improve drainage so the roots do not sit in water, which can lead to rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Spirea twice a week to help the root system get established in its new home. Once the plant is mature, it is quite drought tolerant, but providing a deep soak during dry spells prevents the foliage from crisping at the edges. Consistent moisture ensures the most prolific bloom cycles and prevents the plant from entering a defensive, dormant state mid summer.

Pruning Tips

Ice Dragon Spirea blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in late winter or very early spring before new growth starts. Think of it like a seasonal haircut: cutting the stems back by about one third encourages a flush of fresh, vigorous growth and more flower clusters. You can also lightly shear the plant after the first round of flowers fades to encourage a second, smaller bloom in late summer.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 formula, once in early spring as the leaf buds begin to swell. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this pushes soft new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. This prevents unnecessary winter dieback and keeps the plant's energy focused on root health during the dormant months.

Bloomables® Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea (Spiraea japonica 'Iceconspir') features unique new growth emerging in the spring as a deep burgundy, showing off against blue-green, older foliage for a striking contrast! At the ends of every branch sits a flat-topped densely packed cluster of raspberry pink blooms!

Ice Dragon™ has fizzy pink flowers that start in late spring and sporadically re-bloom throughout the season (especially if you take the time to shear your plants after the first round of blooms fade). Pollinators like butterflies go crazy for these blossoms and you'll also enjoy many native bee visitors as well!

Bloomables® Empire® Spiraea displays attractive foliage on a compact plant. This exciting new offering is low-maintenance and performs excellently in the landscape throughout USDA growing zones 4 through 9! Maturing just 3-4 feet tall and wide, this fantastic new offering is a landscaping delight!

Planting and Application:

Ice Dragon™ Spirea are always welcome additions to foundation plantings and as low hedges, where their foliage and flower colors show off all growing season long! You'll even enjoy a touch of fall hues once a chill enters the air! Use these smaller neatly mounded Spiraea as facer plants or as color along a fence or rock wall, or to inject some spice to a mixed shrub border!

A great size for larger containers around the pool, porch, patio and deck! Container gardeners on balconies can enjoy strategic privacy and your front steps gain easy care beauty without all the fuss! Create rows, groupings, or versatile specimen plantings by using the Ice Dragon™ anywhere in your sun garden!
  • Fizzy Looking Flat-Topped Pink Blooms
  • Burgundy New Growth & Blue-Green Foliage
  • Reblooms All Growing Season!
  • Pollinators Galore!
  • Large Planters, Groupings, Facer Plants, Backdrops & Hedges

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Bloomables® Spirea are tough plants that tolerate nearly any full sun location. Tolerating a wide range of well-drained soils and even urban environments, as long as the site is well-drained and not soggy, these shrubs do fantastic in your landscape! Then, once established, these shrubs are xeric and drought tolerant! But for the healthiest shrubs, provide regular moisture in times of need. Prune after the flowers have faded to shape and control size, and shearing/deadheading will encourage repeat blooming, but it's generally carefree!

  • Tough Tolerant & Loves Full Sun
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs Once Established
  • Most Types of Well-Drained Soil & Appreciates & Mulched Beds
  • Prune/Deadhead After Flowering
  • Deer Resistant & Cold Hardy
  • Very Easy To Grow & Low-Maintenance

New and improved, compact and colorful, the Bloomables® Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea will inject some new features into your landscape without sacrificing space! Order now at Nature Hills!
