Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 full hours of direct sun daily to ensure the brightest flower color and the most compact growth. While it can handle partial shade, you will notice fewer blooms and a more leggy, open habit if it does not get enough light.
  • Soil: This shrub requires excellent drainage and thrives in loose, loamy soil. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised mound or add organic compost to the backfill to prevent the roots from sitting in soggy ground, which can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Butterfly Bush deeply twice a week to help the root system reach deep into the soil. Once established, this variety is quite drought tolerant, but providing supplemental water during heat waves prevents the foliage from wilting and keeps the flower spikes looking fresh. Inconsistent watering often results in smaller flower clusters and can cause the plant to enter a premature dormant state.

Pruning Tips

Because Blue Chip Jr. blooms on new wood grown during the current season, you should prune it back in early spring just as new green growth begins to emerge. Cut the entire plant back to about 12 inches from the ground to encourage a flush of vigorous new stems and a tidy, rounded shape. Think of this like a fresh haircut that removes old debris and makes room for a massive display of summer flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as the first leaves appear to fuel the rapid growth of blooming stems. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, green growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. This late season growth is very susceptible to winter damage and can weaken the overall health of the shrub.

Bold purple blooms and amazing fragrance, the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Lo & Behold® Buddleia are compact and perfect for the smaller urban landscape and container gardener! The Lo & Behold® Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush, (Buddleia x 'Blue Chip Jr.') has a small stature but incredible full-sized flowers! Each long, floral spike consists of a clustered gathering of tiny florets in a delicate blueish hue.

With a gentle, rounded nature and compact habit, Blue Chip Jr. is a fast-growing flowering bush that won't take long to establish and won't demand your time and effort to maintain! The aromatic silvery-tinted green foliage is the perfect rounded backdrop to the upright spires of bold purple/blue blossoms! But you may not notice because of the sheer amount of hummingbirds and butterflies that will be dropping by to enjoy the nectar-rich blooms!

The outstanding feature of your Lo & Behold® Blue Chip Junior Butterfly Bush is of course the profusion of fragrant flowers that repeatedly bloom from mid-June and continue re-blooming right up until the first frost.

Sweet and petite, these shrubs reach 18-30 inches in height when in bloom and spread into a rounded 20-28 inches. Highly adaptable throughout USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9, these shrubs can act as perennials in colder climates, thriving in heat, humidity, cold, and remaining pest and disease-free!

Planting and Application:

Perhaps best of all, Blue Chip Jr. is (just as the name implies) a smaller version of Blue Chip with a more compact nature. Blue Chip Jr. will fit snugly into many locations in your yard but still perform just as beautifully as its larger relative! If you have the room, you can create tiered groupings by pairing Junior with its big brother!

Of course, another outstanding feature of the Butterfly Bush is its irresistible allure to wildlife! Set up some lawn chairs or a garden bench and get ready for the swarms of Hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees that will bring their beauty and delightful nature to your yard! As well as provide their pollination skills for your fruiting plants and veggies.

Plant a few of these space-saving shrubs along an outbuilding for a decorative hedge, or just one in any spot for a lively focal point that's sure to enliven even the most drab location. Low enough to act as a facer plant or front-of-the-border edging, the tidy mounds are naturally rounded and act as visual property division and garden structure! Even larger planters work great for these sun-loving shrubs!

Easy to grow as a space-saving specimen plant as it is as an en masse planting, Butterfly Bushes are beautiful additions to Rock Gardens, and Cottage Borders, and transform any garden into a Pollinator garden!

  • Dark Blue-Hued Purple Flower Spires
  • Fragrant Rebloomer & Great Cut Flowers
  • Silvery Aromatic Foliage & Compact Rounded Mounds
  • Major Pollinator Nectar & Pollen Resources
  • Brilliant Specimens, Large Planter Thrillers, Mixed Beds & Mass Plantings

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Butterfly Bushes bloom best in full sun and in less sun will get leggy and not flower as profusely. Give Blue Chip Jr. a place in your garden with good drainage and plant with Nature Hills Root Booster. Provide your Buddleia regular moisture access for their first year but become low-water usage once established. Provide supplemental moisture during drought and the summer months to keep the flowers returning. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to support your shrub's root system to hold moisture consistently and insulate the roots.

Take care to deadhead this beauty and you will have flowers well into autumn. Once winter hits, Butterfly Bushes will die back to the ground like a perennial in cold winters. In warmer climates, prune it back in spring to 12 inches to rejuvenate the entire plant.

  • Full Sun Shrubs
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Fast Growing & Cold Hardy
  • Moderate Moisture & Fertility
  • Deer Seldom Bother Them
  • Prune In Early Spring
