Love it

Love it. Chartreuse!

Chartreuse is such a great reason to love a grass. Heavy Metal puts on a real show with that color, and the upright habit means it stays tidy through the season too. Thanks for sharing, Jasen.

Very satisfied!

We are very pleased how this switch grass has done. We used it as a border along a section of yard that is next to our alley where there is no fence. It is on the second year and it's beautiful! The are in full Texas sun and dry climate. The survived our cold, windy winter below 0 as well. The color is gorgeous, it stands mostly straight up and a few leaves are almost 4 ft. The bottom is clean so it has more of a umbrella shape. It gets glints of red leaves in the fall. Very satisfied in the Texas Panhandle! I will try to post pictures on your Facebook page.

Winter interest

I really like the color during the growing season and I like the way they stand up in the winter to give my back yard some sort of structure. Heavy snow does make them bend down though.

Hi Et,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Heavy Metal Switch Grass! We're glad to hear you appreciate its beautiful coloration during the growing season and the way it adds structure to your backyard in the winter. It’s true that heavy snow can weigh the grass down, which is quite natural for ornamental grasses. To help reduce bending, you might consider gently brushing off excess snow after a storm or adding a supportive ring or stake specifically designed for grasses during winter months.

If you're looking for more tips on how to care for your switch grass throughout the seasons, feel free to check out our care guide on the site or reach out anytime – we’re always happy to help your garden thrive!

Dear ET,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Heavy Metal Switch Grass! We’re delighted to hear that you appreciate both its vibrant color during the growing season and the way it adds structure to your backyard throughout winter. You’re absolutely right—while these grasses make an excellent ornamental feature year-round, heavy snow can sometimes weigh their sturdy leaves down.

To help your switch grass maintain its shape, you might consider giving it a gentle shake after heavy snowfalls to encourage the stems back into place. Additionally, tying the clumps loosely with garden twine in late fall can offer extra support against heavy weather.

If you ever want more seasonal care tips or ideas on complementary plantings to keep your yard lively all year long, feel free to reach out. We’re always here to help your garden flourish!

very happy

I received these in the spring and they took off like crazy once they were in the ground. They are in full sun, with Southern exposure - they get sun from early AM to sunset. They are around my air conditioner and have tolerated the hot air that comes from the fan. The have grown from about 18" and skimpy to 4 feet and full. Only thing I can say is that mine dont seem to stand vertical on the outskirts of the plant, they are laying flat. Im hoping next year when they come back that theyll be more erect like the pictures show.

Hello Newbie Gardener,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Heavy Metal Switch Grass! We're delighted to hear that your plants have flourished so well under full sun and even handled the hot air near your air conditioner—that's fabulous resilience on their part.

Regarding the stems leaning outward rather than standing fully upright on the edges, this is a common growth habit for some switch grass varieties, especially as plants get fuller and mature. To encourage more vertical growth, you might consider thinning out some of the denser sections carefully in early spring, which can promote stronger, more upright stems. Additionally, ensuring they’re planted in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil and not overwatering can also reduce floppiness.

Come next season, our tip is to let the grasses hedge in winter before cutting them back in early spring—that way the plants focus on layered growth that often gives a firmer structure. You really have a great setup with all that sunlight, so we’re optimistic yours will stand tall and proud soon.

Thanks again for trusting us and for providing such thoughtful feedback! If you have any more questions or want tips as your garden evolves, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Hello Newbie G.,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Heavy Metal Switch Grass! It’s great to hear how well they’ve taken off in their sunny spot—even thriving near your air conditioner, which shows their impressive hardiness. Growing from 18' to 4 feet and becoming fuller sounds like a victorious start!

Regarding the stems lying flat on the outskirts, this can be fairly common as the clump expands. Switch grasses often have straighter, more erect growth toward the center with the outer stems sometimes arching or spreading as they mature. In spring, a gentle shearing or cutting back of the grass—even down to about 6 inches—can promote the tight, upright form you’re aiming for when new shoots emerge next season. Ensuring adequate water during dry periods and even factoring in some mild fertilization can also help keep those stands robust and upright.

We’re excited to see how your plant continues to develop, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have more questions! Your success is our joy.
