Description
Louisa Crabapple (Malus 'Louisa') is a weeping flowering crabapple whose branches cascade to the ground and spread along it. It grows about 10 to 15 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide and thrives in zones 4 through 8.
In April, red buds open to fragrant, true-pink single flowers up to 1 1/2 inches across that line the falling branches. Small crabapples up to 1/2 inch follow, ripening in fall to yellow with a rose blush and hanging on well into winter, when birds come for them. Glossy, dark green leaves keep the weeping outline full through summer, and Louisa has good resistance to the main crabapple diseases. Fall leaf color is usually minor, so the fruit carries the late-season show.
The weeping shape is the reason to grow Louisa, so give it a spot where it can be seen from all sides: a specimen in the lawn, an accent near a patio or entry, or a small group. Allow about 15 feet of space so the branches can spread without crowding. It tolerates urban conditions, and bees work the spring flowers.
- Light: full sun, at least six hours of direct light a day
- Water: medium moisture; established trees have some drought tolerance
- Soil: well-drained, acidic loam is best, and it adapts to a wide range of soils
- Care: prune as needed in late winter, not spring, to keep fire blight out. For more, see our crabapple care and selection guide
