Understanding Our Container Sizes

At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

What to expect: About the size of a large coffee can. A well-developed root system in a manageable size. Good value choice when you have time to let the plant grow into the space over a season or two.

#2 Container

Plant age: 2 to 3 years
Best for: Shrubs and trees where you want faster establishment
What to expect: A noticeable step up from a #1 in both plant size and root development. Good choice when you want visible presence without going to a larger size.

#3 Container

Plant age: 3 to 4 years
Best for: Most plants, most situations — flowering trees, shade trees, evergreen shrubs
What to expect: Our most popular size. Strong, developed root system. Plants in a #3 container make an immediate visual impact from day one. If you want a head start rather than waiting seasons for a plant to fill in, this is typically the right choice.

#5 Container and Larger

Plant age: 4 to 5+ years
Best for: Specimen plants, privacy screens, maximum instant impact
What to expect: Large, mature plants ready to make an immediate statement in your landscape. We also carry #7 and larger sizes for select varieties.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

Are you looking for a perfect Lilac that will bloom in your warmer growing zone? It can be tough to find! A wonderful option is the extremely fragrant Scentara Pura® Lilac (Syringa x hyacinthiflora 'SMNSHSO')! Thriving amazingly from the coldest climates, all the way up into the lower chill climates of USDA growing zone 8!

A highly floriferous variety, the poignantly purple and classic look of the Scentara Pura®'s spring blooms is only outdone by the amazing smell emanating from within each flower bud. And it's a deep, true fragrance, stronger than other Lilac varieties! A variety of hyacinthiflora Lilac, it's one of the most fragrant types available!

The large flower clusters are made up of loads of fragrant lavender mini-florets, making this Lilac the perfect cut flower for bringing indoors for your favorite vase. Just imagine the centerpiece at your table, and the smell filling your entire house!

Lively green foliage is the perfect backdrop for those gorgeous blooms that follow in spring. After the blooms are done, the light green leaves remain a thick, view-blocking shrub for the remainder of the growing season. Dense and compact in form, this Lilac is an upright-growing shrub that highlights your summer shrubs and perennials, holding their color until the winter chill changes them to yellow before they fall.

This hybrid of Lilac was bred for excellent disease resistance, and deer tend to pass it by. However, you'll have no shortage of bees, butterflies, beneficial pollinators, and even hummingbirds! Wildlife love to nest and take shelter in the dense branches, too!

Planting and Application:

The fabulous blooms of Scentara Pura® are, of course, radiant in that dreamy purple bloom and the amazing scent! Butterfly or pollinator gardens are the most iconic places for these great Lilacs. Cutting gardens are the next obvious location, so you can have easy access to armloads of these fragrant flowers!

Any sunny mixed border, wonderful in large planters, or to the back of your perennial garden, Scentara Pura® fits right in without overwhelming in size. Being more compact and reaching just 4-6' tall and wide, there is no place that won't suit this moderate-sized Lilac shrub!

Fitting into formal rows and urban gardens, or flouncing freely in cottage gardens and rural borders, Scentara Pura® is a luxurious addition to any style! #ProPlantTips for Care:

The Scentara Pura® is very easy to grow and highly adaptable in a great many climates. The Scentara® Pura is an improvement over traditional Lilac varieties, with more fragrance and better resistance to common diseases like leaf spot and higher resistance to powdery mildew. It's also deer-resistant! Plus, it displays superior performance in warmer areas than other Lilacs

Doing great in full sun all day long! Lilacs do need at least six hours or more of sun exposure per day for the best growth and the best blooms. Lilacs require well-drained soils and moderate moisture. Apply a low nitrogen fertilizer as soon as leaves emerge in spring. Preferring more alkaline soil, they are tough and resilient regardless, and they are not concerned with soil type and tolerate moderate drought once established. Add a three-inch layer of mulch over the root system, then pull it away from the stems directly to provide proper air circulation.

One of the more compact Lilacs, Scentara Pura® shouldn't require much pruning. Only prune right after the flowers are done blooming, as they bloom on last year's wood. You wouldn't want to risk inadvertently removing next year's amazing floral display!

Pocahontas Lilac

Very Pleased , shrub came well packed and very healthy , it’s actually blooming 3 lilacs for a baby shrub . Pocahontas is one of my favorite lilacs , I already have two that I got from a mom and pop garden center 25 years ago . They bloom earlier than other lilacs and bloom in abundance . I’ve been looking for another one for years , the big garden centers around me don’t carry them , I’m so thankful I found one with Nature Hills.
