Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Choose a spot that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight every day. Full sun is essential for maximum flower production and helps the foliage dry quickly to prevent powdery mildew.
  • Soil: These lilacs prefer well drained soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost or plant the shrub in a slightly raised mound to ensure the roots never sit in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide deep watering twice a week to help the root system establish itself. While mature lilacs have decent drought tolerance, keeping the soil consistently moist during the heat of summer prevents stress and ensures the plant has enough energy to set next year's buds. If watering is erratic, you may notice smaller blooms or scorched leaf edges.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on old wood, so the best time to prune is immediately after the flowers have finished fading in late spring. Use sharp bypass pruners to remove spent flower heads and thin out the oldest, thickest stems every few years to let light into the center. This technique acts like a rejuvenation treatment, encouraging fresh stems to grow from the base which will produce the best flowers in future seasons.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring before the new growth starts to push out. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers, especially those meant for lawns, in the late summer or fall. High nitrogen late in the season forces the plant to create tender new growth that can easily be killed by the first hard freeze of winter.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Lilacs are very easy to grow! Choose a planting site for Lilacs in full sun with at least six hours of sunlight. They do best in well-drained soil that is organically enriched but not overly fertilized. For poor drainage sites, raise your Lilacs up over the water table by creating a planting mound to improve drainage. Add symbiotic Nature Hills Root Booster formula in the planting hole for a life-long benefit to the feeder roots and top the root system with a 3-4 inch layer of mulch or arborist bark chips.

Apply supplemental water when the top inch of your soil gets dry. Protect your investment during dry weather to keep your plants happy and stress-free! Try watering at the roots or using in-ground irrigation to keep the leaves clean and dry.

Once the blooms are done, you can snip them off the shrub and prune your shrub for shape and size control. Correct any crossing or damaged branches at that time, cutting at a 45-degree angle above an outward-facing leaf bud. But avoid pruning your shrub any time after that or you'll risk removing next year's breathtaking floral display!
