Description
The Monstera Deliciosa, better known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a climbing tropical houseplant grown for its huge, glossy split leaves. It reaches 6 to 8 feet in most homes, thrives in bright, indirect light, and forgives the occasional missed watering. If you want one easy-care statement plant, this is the one.
Split Leaves That Get Better Every Year
Young leaves emerge solid and heart shaped. As your plant matures, each new leaf unfurls with more of the deep splits and holes, called fenestrations, that made this plant famous. In its native rainforest, stretching from southern Mexico to Panama, those leaves can span 2 feet across.
Botanists named it Monstera deliciosa for its monstrous foliage and the sweet, pineapple and banana flavored fruit it bears in the wild. Indoors it stays a foliage plant, and what foliage it is.
Where to Place Your Monstera
Set it a few feet from an east or south facing window where the light is bright but indirect. It grows well in average household humidity and appreciates a little extra in dry winter months.
Give it a moss pole or trellis to climb and new leaves come in larger and more deeply split. It pairs naturally with the rest of our houseplants, and it belongs on a shelf or stand out of reach of curious cats and dogs.
