Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this perennial at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for the strongest stems. While it tolerates partial shade, too little sun will cause the plant to become "leggy" and flop over.
  • Soil: Plant in average, well-draining soil that retains some moisture. If you are working with heavy clay or sandy soil, mix in organic compost to help regulate moisture levels and keep the roots happy.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist during the first season to help the plant establish a deep root system. Once established, 'Pink Manners' is moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering can cause the lower leaves to yellow or drop. For the best display of flowers, try not to let the soil dry out completely.

Pruning Tips

Since this plant dies back to the ground in winter, you should cut the dried stems down to the soil line in early spring before new growth emerges. Unlike the aggressive wild species, 'Pink Manners' stays in a polite clump, so you generally do not need to prune roots to control spreading.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring just as you see new green growth appearing. Avoid heavy nitrogen fertilization later in the season, as this encourages rapid, weak foliage growth that often leads to floppy stems rather than flower production.
